Circle K Reports 14,000 Tonnes of CO2 Saved
Circle K, one of Ireland’s leading fuel and convenience retailer, is excited to announce the launch of “Circle K Renewable Fuels Week – powered by milesBIO," a limited one-week special offer designed to promote the adoption of Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO) as a sustainable alternative to diesel. Running from 15th to 21st July, Circle K will offer milesBIO HVO100 at the same price as diesel across all participating locations. This offer will allow fleet customers to experience the benefits of HVO without any cost implications, facilitating a smoother transition to cleaner energy solutions.
Since November 2022, Circle K’s own fleet has been running on HVO, leading to the saving of 14,000 tonnes of CO2. HVO is a completely fossil-free biofuel made from waste by-products and derived products not intended for human consumption from the food industry, and can be used to power diesel vehicles. HVO alternative diesel offers an up to 90% reduction in carbon emissions over regular diesel. Through the introduction of HVO, Circle K is also supporting businesses with fleet operations in reducing their carbon emissions. Companies such as Irish Rail, Derry Group Ireland, McCulla Ireland and Alltrans are all partnering with Circle K and have introduced this carbon neutral fuel to their operations to reduce emissions across their respective fleets.
Jim Meade, Chief Executive, Iarnród Éireann: “Iarnród Éireann is delighted to partner with Circle K during Renewable Fuels week. Circle K is our road vehicle fleet fuel supplier and we welcome forecourt availability of renewable fuels. Iarnród Éireann is committed to reducing our carbon emissions by 51% by 2030 with HVO a very beneficial transition fuel source as we work to achieve this goal.
Iarnród Éireann published its Climate Action Plan in 2023 and renewable fuel sources are crucial in the short to medium term whilst we progress our longer-term ambitions to utilise renewable electricity as traction power to the network. Since 2023, we have transitioned our maintenance trains to HVO fuel and we are completing HVO trials on our passenger and freight rolling stock, with a view to incorporating HVO into our fuel mix. We are also aiming to fuel our road fleet with HVO and this is becoming increasingly easier with a greater number of Circle K forecourts with HVO pumps. We will continue to source from Circle K which is supply chain traceable and has associated International Sustainability & Carbon Certification.”
HVO remains a priority for Circle K and this year it has allocated over €2 million towards ongoing and upcoming projects. Circle K offers the largest network of HVO sites in Ireland, with 15 strategically located stations across 11 counties, and the company is committed to providing access to HVO renewable diesel on all national road routes.
Ciara Foxton, Managing Director for Circle K Ireland said, “We are excited to offer Circle K Renewable Fuels Week to support our customers. This special promotion underscores our commitment to sustainability and helping businesses to make environmentally responsible choices without additional cost.
With our extensive network, and this limited-time price match offer, we are making it more accessible for businesses to make the switch to renewable fuels to support their own sustainability journeys. Since November 2022, our entire fleet has been running on HVO, resulting in the saving of approximately 14,000 tonnes of CO2. This reduction is equivalent to taking 5,000 cars off the road for a year*. During ‘Renewable Fuels Week’ kicking off on July 15th, we estimate an additional 500 tonnes of CO2 will be saved during the campaign week alone, representing a significant step in our journey to create a more sustainable environment.”
