Kverneland Enduro Proving Its Worth for Wexford Grower

For Philip Kehoe, a tillage farmer just outside New Ross in Co. Wexford, consistent performance and time-saving machinery are essential. Philip and his family have been growing potatoes and barley for almost 50 years, and this spring they added a new tool to their line-up: the 5m Kverneland Enduro.

It’s not their first Kverneland grubber — the family has worked with a 3m CLC for over 12 years — but the move to a wider machine was about efficiency and convenience, especially during busy planting windows.

A tool to match the pace

“We went for the 5-metre Enduro really to save time,” says Philip. “We have the 3-metre CLC and we found it working very well. But in the spring, you could have two contractors in sowing barley and we like to grub the headlands before they sow it. We can’t have them waiting on us.”

That need for speed is exactly what the Enduro range is designed for. With working widths up to 5.0m, it’s built for high-capacity stubble cultivation in a single pass. And for Philip, that means jobs that once took hours are now done in minutes.

“With this machine, we have hydraulic depth control, so you can adjust it in seconds. We also have a hydraulic top link. That makes changes quick and easy. It's very responsive.”

The Enduro 5000F offers a working width of 5 metres and folds to a compact 2.85 metres for road transport, making it both efficient in the field and practical on the road.

Headlands better than the middle

While the Enduro is often used for stubble cultivation post-harvest, Philip also puts it to work ahead of sowing — particularly on headlands. “We’re plough-based, so we plough the full field, but before we sow the headlands, we grub them. The results speak for themselves. In recent years, the headlands have been better than the middle of the field.”

One of the key reasons behind that might be how the Enduro works the soil. Its staggered tine arrangement provides excellent mixing and levelling, while still maintaining consistent working depth — even on headlands that have seen heavy machinery and compaction.

A machine that adapts to conditions

The Enduro is built to handle everything from shallow soil loosening to deeper cultivation. Working depth can be adjusted hydraulically from 5cm up to 30cm, depending on the soil conditions and desired result.

With 750mm inter-row clearance and 870mm underbeam clearance, the Enduro 5000F is built to handle high volumes of crop residue without blocking — even at higher working speeds.

“We mainly use it after harvesting potatoes to break any compaction made during digging and to stop water runoff over winter,” says Philip. “But we’ve also gone in with it ahead of tilling in late springs when the plough is busy. It does a great job.”

Smart touches that matter

Although the move up to the Enduro was about covering ground faster, Philip says there are some clever differences in design that make a big impact — especially when compared to their older 3m machine.

“The difference over our CLC — even something as simple as the outer shin piece — it’s curved and angled and it stops lumps pushing out past the wheel. It really helps keep your prepared ground clean. It’s a small thing but it makes a big difference.”

The Enduro is also designed with minimal maintenance in mind. “We find it very easy to manage,” he continues. “With the hydraulic depth wheels and all the grease nipples easily accessible, you’re not wasting time. It’s well laid out and the build quality is solid.”

In fact, Philip notes that after more than a decade with the CLC, they’ve never had to replace a leg. “That says it all. Kverneland stuff is built to last. I’d imagine this machine will be just as strong.”

Dealer support and setup

The Enduro was supplied by Donohoe’s in Enniscorthy — a name familiar to many growers in the region. “We bought it from Donohoe’s and they came out to help us set it up. There’s basically no setup really, just levelling it, but it was good to have them there. We’re very happy with Donohoe’s — good lads to deal with.”

Final verdict

With spring and autumn workloads both ramping up, Philip says he’s delighted with the performance of the new Enduro. “It’s really helped us get through jobs faster and with a better finish. From what we’ve seen so far, we’d definitely recommend it.”
