  • EV Dealership of the Year named for Connacht

    Connolly’s Volvo Cars, the dedicated Volvo dealer for Galway, is today celebrating after the franchise was named the Zero Emissions Vehicle Ireland (ZEVI) EV Dealership of the Year for Connacht. General manager Tom Raftery accepted the award on behalf of the dealership at a gala ceremony in the Clayton Hotel in Ballsbridge recently. Connolly’s Volvo Cars progressed to the provincial final after being named the ZEVI EV Dealership of the Year for Galway earlier this year.  More than 130 car dealerships from across the country entered the fourth annual ZEVI awards, which sets out to recognise car dealerships that work to increase consumer understanding and experience of EVs and their uptake on Irish roads. Award judges found Connolly’s Volvo Cars team to be leaders in EV sales, showroom presentation, and staff knowledge and expertise. The franchise will now contest the national final at the SEAI Energy Show in the RDS on March 26. The ZEVI EV Dealership of the Year honours come as the outlet celebrated its two-year anniversary in January this year.  Connolly’s Volvo Cars has grown significantly since opening its doors in 2023, increasing its staff numbers to 15 across its various service lines, opening its upstairs showroom with space for up to 60 new vehicles, and expanding its aftersales department. The franchise has hosted TV architect and Volvo Car Ireland brand ambassador Dermot Bannon at promotional events and has sponsored community events like the Masters Thursday golf tournament at Dromoland Castle in Clare, and the Quest Adventure Series, which is regarded by some as the best multi-sport adventure race in the world. Plans are in place to further grow the total workforce to 20 in the next 12 months and increase its sponsorships of community events and sports competitions.  The promotion of EVs is a key plank of the company’s commitment to transitioning away from fossil fuel-powered cars, a strategy which began with following the industry standard of ending of all diesel vehicle sales in 2023 and continues with the recent release of two new fully electric Volvo models, the EX30 and EX90.   • Electric Car Sales Continue To Rise

    The Society of the Irish Motor Industry ( SIMI ) released their official 251 new vehicle registration statistics for February. New car registrations for February were down 15% (14,012) when compared to February 2024 (16,432) (which had an extra day of trading). Registrations year to date are also down 0.8% (47,483) on the same period last year (47,850).  Light Commercial Vehicles (LCV) declined by 8% (3,201) compared to February last year (3,486). Year to date LCVs are down 13.5% (9,471). HGVs (Heavy Goods Vehicles) registrations are down 3% (292) in comparison to February 2024 (301). Year to date HGVs are up 0.9% (762). Imported Used Cars have seen a 13.2% (5,599) rise in February 2025, when compared to February 2024 (4,946). Year to date imports are up 9.1% (11,203) on 2024 (10,271). In February 2,524 new electric cars were registered, which was 36% higher than the 1,856 registrations in February 2024. So far this year, 7,447 new electric cars have been registered representing a 25.1% increase compared to the same period in 2024 when 5,949 electric cars were registered.  In the new car market share by engine type for 2025, Petrol cars continue to lead the new car market at 27.88%, followed by Hybrid (Petrol Electric) at 23.76%, Diesel at 16.65%, Electric at 15.68%, and Plug-in Electric Hybrid at 14.30%.  Brian Cooke, SIMI Director General commented : “Following a strong start in January, new car registrations have seen some retraction in February, with registrations declining by 15%, while year to date registrations are now marginally behind last year. However, going against this trend has been electric vehicles, with an increase in EV sales of 36% in February to 2,524 units, with private consumers, who benefit from the SEAI Grant, contributing two thirds of EV sales this year. The importance of Government supports is key to maintaining this momentum, particularly with a greater range of EVs coming on stream.   • Opel Mokka First Drive

    On a recent trip to the Balearic Island of Mallorca, we had the pleasure of road testing the latest iteration of the Opel Mokka. This little SUV has become a firm favourite among Irish drivers and we are told, the order bank is already looking very healthy for this revised model in 2025. With its modern styling and impressive selection of powertrains, it looks like the new Mokka will have an offering to suit everyone's needs. From the outside, the Mokka takes more of an evolutionary approach with Opel’s signature Vizor front, now proudly displaying the redesigned Blitz emblem and flanked by cutting edge LED headlights. The black trim running from the bonnet to the rear above the side windows, as well as black cladding on the wheel arches and bumpers looks stylish and modern whilst the aero wheels have been designed to enhance overall efficiency. Notably, Opel has removed all chrome detailing which featured on the outgoing model and this new Mokka looks all the better for it! Inside, the Mokka continues the eco-conscious approach most brands are on with cabin materials made from lots of recycled contents. The first thing that stands out is the newly designed steering wheel, which is flattened at the top and bottom for a more engaging feel. Made from vegan materials, it also incorporates the Blitz emblem and feels pretty premium for a vehicle that will no doubt be at a competitive price point. The centre console has been simplified with a matte silver finish, and some physical buttons have been replaced with touchscreen controls which de-clutters the dash. During our stop at Port Adriano, I took a closer look at the technology and infotainment system, which has seen a major upgrade! When you turn on the ignition you are greeted with state-of-the-art graphics, new multimedia capabilities, and seamless phone connectivity, including Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and 4G. A standard 10-inch digital driver display and a matching 10-inch touchscreen serve as the main focal points of the cockpit and voice recognition system, activated by a simple ‘Hey, Opel’, allows for hands-free control whilst on the move. All this tech gets over-the-air updates to ensure that navigation maps and software stay up to date all year round. Wireless smartphone charging and USB-C connectivity add to the convenience, and for those who opt for the integrated navigation system, Opel’s ChatGPT function will provide intelligent assistance for a variety of tasks. The 180-degree rear-view camera is standard on the GS trim and it makes parking a doddle in tight city spaces. So what’s powering the new Mokka we hear you ask and what is it like to drive? Well, Irish buyers have a choice of several powertrains to suit different driving needs! Entry will be a simple 1.2 litre petrol whilst the hybrid pairs a 1.2-litre turbocharged 136 hp petrol engine with a 21 kW electric motor and a six-speed dual-clutch transmission. This setup reduces fuel consumption and emissions, allowing for fully electric driving at low speeds or around cities. The fully electric variant has a 156 hp motor and a 54 kWh battery offering a WLTP range of up to 403 km. The battery is neatly integrated under the floor, lowering the centre of gravity for improved handling through tight bends. Speaking of handling what models did we drive? We sampled the winding roads of Mallorca in both the hybrid and electric Mokka’s back to back. Both felt balanced with responsive steering that made for a rather enjoyable drive. Neither are quick by any means but regardless of whether we were gliding along the coastal motorway, or tackling narrow mountain passes, the little SUV felt pretty composed. The hybrid model, in particular, stood out for its seamless transition between electric and petrol power, while the electric variant impressed with its instant acceleration and now longer range! Weighing just 1,615 kg, the Mokka Electric delivers 260 Nm of torque allowing it to propel up mountains with ease. So how do we sum this one up? Well, with its stylish design, advanced technology, and multiple powertrain options, the new Opel Mokka is set to be a strong contender in the compact SUV market. Expected to arrive in Ireland this spring in 3 trims, SC, Elegance & GS full pricing will be announced in the coming weeks. Whether opting for petrol, hybrid, or electric, Irish drivers can look forward to a well-rounded package that delivers efficiency, innovation, and plenty of driving enjoyment.   • MINI Cooper S Convertible First Drive

    For those looking for a fun, stylish, and a relatively affordable convertible, MINI has long been a top consideration for many here in Ireland. Even though our weather is far from convertible-friendly, this drop-top has somehow remained a popular choice over the years. Now, a new generation has arrived and following the launch of the Cooper hatchback in 2024, we were afforded the first drive opportunity of the new MINI Convertible through the vibrant city streets and stunning mountain passes of Barcelona. This latest version retains MINI’s signature charm but introduces a host of modern updates. Though pretty much every component is new except for the front doors this latest iteration brings styling tweaks that align it with the new hatchback. A redesigned front grille and advanced lighting technology, featuring three customisable light signatures, give it a fresh yet familiar look. It comes in three trim levels Classic, Sport, and Exclusive alongside the range-topping John Cooper Works. Standard equipment is generous, with LED lighting, dual-zone climate control, blind-spot monitoring, and the new infotainment system included on all models. The Classic trim keeps things simple with smaller silver alloy wheels and a black grille, while the Sport gets John Cooper Works styling cues and sports seats. The Exclusive trim leans towards luxury, featuring stylish silver accents and premium upholstery. Stepping inside you will notice the cabin is now centered around MINI’s slick 9.5-inch circular OLED infotainment screen, which replaces traditional dials and houses most controls. It’s well-designed, crystal clear and responsive, though it does take a little getting used to. Given the lack of a conventional instrument cluster, we highly recommend opting for the Level 1 options pack, which includes a head-up display for essential driving information right in your eye line. There is the usual nod to classic MINI elements, such as the tactile toggle switch bar beneath the screen. Material quality is impressive, with stylish fabric trims and supportive sports seats that vary depending on the trim level. The Exclusive model, in particular, stands out with its stylish blue artificial leather upholstery. Practicality remains a tough point for the MINI Convertible and whilst it does have four seats, you would really need to possess chicken legs to sit in the rear. Children are best suited to this space for sure and although it's tight, the convertible roof’s roomy design gives pretty decent headroom. To the rear you can drop the tailgate downward to reveal 210 litres of boot space with the roof up. This figure shrinks to 165 litres when the roof is down but a clever mechanism allows the roof to lift slightly, enabling you to slide in bulkier items. The back seats also fold down, but overall storage remains limited as expected from a car of these proportions. The MINI Convertible’s engine lineup reflects that of the petrol-powered Cooper hatchback. Buyers can choose from the entry-level 163hp 1.5-litre Cooper C, the mid-range 204hp 2.0-litre Cooper S, or the sportier John Cooper Works with 231hp. All models come exclusively with a seven-speed automatic transmission, MINI has now phased out manual gearboxes across its range. We tested the Cooper S, which is likely be the best-selling version. It delivers a spirited drive, with 0-100 kph taking just 6.9 seconds and a top speed of 237 kph. The John Cooper Works reduces this time down to 6.4 seconds, thanks to its increased power output. Running costs are similar across all variants, with official fuel economy figures ranging between 7.4 L/100 km combined and CO2 emissions from 147-161g/km. MINI briefly experimented with an EV version in 2023, but it was met with limited success. For now, the brand has pushed back the idea of an electric convertible Driving a MINI Convertible has always been about fun, and this new model is no different! The fully electric roof takes just 18 seconds to lower and 15 seconds to close and can be operated at speeds of up to 30 kph. A sunroof-style partial opening is also available, making the car even more versatile. On the mountain roads outside Barcelona, the car’s sharp steering and engaging handling shone through. The MINI Convertible remains nimble and responsive, despite being slightly heavier than the hatchback. It offers excellent grip, though at the limit, it does show a hint of understeer. The convertible’s added chassis reinforcement makes it even stiffer and perhaps a little firm at times but it gives you that go-kart like feel which, has always been a signature trait of MINIs. The turbocharged 2.0 litre engine provides a satisfying note, with distinctive turbo flutters adding to the character. Wind noise is well managed thanks to a deflector across the rear seats, making it easy to hold a conversation even with the roof down at motorway speeds. However, rear visibility is compromised whether the roof is up or down. The automatic gearbox also has some quirks, standard mode can feel sluggish, while ‘Go-Kart’ mode holds onto gears too long. We recommend choosing the Sport trim or John Cooper Works, as both come with gearshift paddles which give you manual control. Overall the new MINI Cooper Convertible keeps the spirit of the brand alive, offering a stylish and engaging driving experience. It’s not the most practical car, and the loss of a manual gearbox is a disappointment, but for those looking for an affordable, fun-to-drive convertible, it remains one of the best options available in Ireland. It still has that premium, well-built feel and with the addition of the soft-top, all we need is a little sun to experience some smiles per gallon.

    So we all know electric vehicles are growing in popularity as the world transitions to cleaner transportation but yet why do so many myths persist about their reliability? In DoneDeal headquarters we often hear about concerns on battery life, fears about charging infrastructure and general misinformation that is often just hearsay. Here, we debunk some of the most common myths about EVs and try to set the record straight. Battery Health One of the most widespread myths about EVs is that their batteries degrade quickly and require frequent replacement. In reality, modern lithium-ion batteries are designed to last for hundreds of thousands of kilometres. Most EV manufacturers offer warranties covering battery packs for at least eight years or 160,000 kilometres, ensuring long-term durability. Advances in battery management systems (BMS) and cooling technologies have significantly improved battery longevity, with some studies showing that EV batteries lose only a small percentage of capacity over time. While degradation does occur, it is generally slow, meaning most drivers will never need a battery replacement during the vehicle's lifetime. Battery Replacement Another common concern is the cost and difficulty of replacing an EV battery. While early EVs did suffer from costly battery replacements, modern EVs feature more durable and efficient battery packs that rarely require full replacement. If a battery does need servicing, manufacturers increasingly offer modular repairs, replacing only the faulty cells instead of the entire pack. Furthermore, battery prices have been decreasing due to advancements in production and recycling methods, making replacements more affordable in the future.     High Speed, Efficiency, and Consistency in the Field For farmers like Thomas from Newbridge, Co. Kildare, the Kverneland 6 metre U-Drill has proven to be a crucial upgrade for tillage farming, addressing the challenges of Ireland’s unpredictable weather and the need for efficiency on large acreages. With its 6m working width and high-speed capability, the U-Drill offers a comprehensive solution for seedbed preparation, levelling, reconsolidation, and seeding, all in a single pass. “For us, the U-Drill has been a huge plus on our farm this year,” Thomas explains. “We’re very, very impressed with it, and I would probably imagine with the current weather conditions, maybe it is the drill for more farmers to get through work.” The U-Drill’s design, which supports high-speed operations between 10-18 km/h, enables Thomas to cover more ground daily, a necessity when working within narrow weather windows. Upgraded Performance with Enhanced Efficiency In recent years, Thomas’s farm faced increasing pressure to complete seeding within short timeframes due to changing weather patterns. The transition from a 4m to a 6m U-Drill brought a significant boost in productivity. “We’ve upgraded from a four-meter U-Drill to a six-meter U-Drill, and the main reason was weather,” he notes. “With the one pass, we could only get so much done, but with the U-Drill, we’re able to get a lot more work done.” A significant factor in the U-Drill’s efficiency is its modular frame concept, which provides stability even at high speeds, ensuring that seed placement remains consistent. "The speed of the U-Drill — I know we can go up as far as 18 km/h — but I’ve chosen around 13 km/h,” Thomas shares. “The seed placement for us at 13 km/h is still hitting where we need to be.” The U-Drill’s CD-coulter system provides the flexibility of two different row widths (12.5 cm and 16.7 cm), making it adaptable to various crops while maintaining consistent seed depth. Simplified Operation and Maintenance The U-Drill is designed with ease of use in mind, featuring full ISOBUS compatibility that puts the operator in control from the tractor cab. “The ease of use for the U-Drill is very simple,” Thomas explains. “You can set your sequence the way you want to go in the field, and the calibration process is very user-friendly.” Calibration can be initiated directly from the cab or the metering unit, saving valuable time by allowing the operator to switch between crops seamlessly. With its large hopper capacity of 4,350 litres, the U-Drill further supports time efficiency by reducing the need for frequent refills. “The U-Drill probably holds maybe three tons plus room for more, maybe three and a half tons, depending on the crop,” Thomas notes. The hopper can be loaded using big bags, a front loader, or a telescopic handler, making the setup process flexible for different farm setups. Precision Through Technology The U-Drill’s headland management system is a standout feature, allowing Thomas to complete headlands more quickly and accurately while minimizing waste. “A standout feature in the U-Drill is the headland management system,” he says. “It’s very user-friendly and can be used with just one touch of a button or one pull of a spool valve.” As Thomas operates the headland management system, the U-Drill lifts the discs and the coulter bar in timed sequences, which stops seed flow to avoid over-seeding at the headland. This efficiency can save up to 5% of seed annually by preventing double seeding and gaps at headlands. Another timesaving feature is the ability to adjust coulter depth, cultivation discs, and seeding rates from the cab. The flexibility allows Thomas to tailor settings on the move, “We can adjust the seeding rate on the move,” he adds, “maybe on the headlands if running low or just wanting to save seed.” This remote adjustment capability contributes to better field management, especially when facing changing field conditions throughout the day. Reliable Seed Placement in Varied Conditions Seed placement is crucial to achieving good crop emergence and the U-Drill’s unique coulter and press wheel system helps ensure consistent results. "The disc coulter we’re finding does a great job," Thomas notes. “It leaves the seed where it needs to be, even at higher speeds.” This is made possible by the U-Drill’s optimized coulter pressure, which maintains stability and uniformity across different soil types. Additionally, the U-Drill’s front and rear packers assist with soil consolidation and ensure that seed-to-soil contact is consistent. The front packer, with an 800mm diameter, helps level the soil, while the staggered rear packers allow for effective reconsolidation, making it easier to work in wet conditions when necessary. “The wide wheels on the front of the U-Drill and the staggered packers at the back are very useful, especially for working in wetter conditions,” Thomas explains. “It’s not ideal, but sometimes we just have to work in those conditions to get finished.” More than Just an Upgrade For Thomas, the Kverneland U-Drill has been more than just an upgrade — it has become a critical part of his farm’s seeding operations.   • New Amazone Catros+ 03 compact disc harrows

    Amazone now offer a new folding mounted disc harrow - the Catros+ 03-2, available in working widths of 4, 5, 6 and 7 m alongside the trailed TS variant with bogey chassis. Perfect for shallow and intensive soil tillage, the low pulling power requirement combined with high forward speeds of the Catros enables high work rates with low fuel consumption. The complete product range of the third generation includes working widths from 2.5 m to 12 m. Smart Frame System – comfortable, quick and precise The intelligent Smart Frame System frame concept is extremely user-friendly. Once the machine has been set up aligned parallel with the ground, the working depth is adjusted by simple rotation of the disc carrier arms. The rows of discs are rotated away from the frame for a deeper setting, or the discs are rotated towards the frame for shallower work, while the machine frame always remains parallel to the soil, meaning that the machine works at the right depth at all times. The deeper the work, the greater the distance between the frame and disc arm and the following roller. This provides optimum through-passage in the machine as a result of the higher clearance. The Smart Frame System allows the working depth to be hydraulically adjusted from the cab when needed, without compromising the results or requiring readjustments. This offers maximum user comfort, especially when working deeper for a short duration such as in tramlines or on the headland. A fixed linkage between the two rows of discs ensures a uniform working depth of the disc element. The frame is also very clearly visible with an open design, meaning that easy monitoring of the implements is guaranteed. When using the mounted machines, the top link does not have to be corrected while adjusting the working depth, and in the trailed models the working depth adjustment has no impact on its combination with any front tools. This is a distinct advantage over other machine concepts, where the working depth is changed by tilting the entire machine, so the front tools have to be re-adjusted. The Catros +03 Smart Frame System makes the task much easier and more efficient. The same applies when using following double rollers and harrows. As a result of the constant position of the frame, the rear harrow or rollers do not tilt when the working depth is changed, so pressure remains the same on both and adjustment is not necessary. Front tools for any application The Catros+ 03-2TS trailed compact disc harrow with bogey chassis is divided into 3 sections: The optional front tools, the disc element and the following roller. A knife roller or Crushboard are offered as front tools. The extremely robust knife roller with maintenance-free bearings is ideal for shredding organic matter such as rape, sunflowers, maize stubbles or catch crops, while the individual roller segments provide perfect contours. The Crushboard can be selected as an alternative if the focus is on seedbed preparation. The right disc for every requirement With a disc diameter of 510 mm, the Catros+ permits working depths from 5 cm to 14 cm and is ideal for a wide range of applications, from full-surface chitting of stubbles and seedbed preparation to medium-deep soil tillage and incorporation of organic matter and liquid manures. Depending on the main application, there is a choice between a smooth, fine-serrated or coarse-serrated disc. Also available for the new Catros+ 03, the X-Cutter disc, with a diameter of 480 mm, is for very shallow work from 2 cm to 8 cm. The wave profile guarantees full-surface movement and high mixing intensity at the same time. Simultaneous incorporation of liquid manures with the pro-Pack The simultaneous incorporation of liquid manures during application reduces nutrient loss and therefore protects the environment. For this purpose, Amazone offers the pro-Pack for the Catros+ mounted compact disc harrows in working widths of 5 m, 6 m and 7 m. A double harrow can also be used on machines with working widths of 6 and 7 m. This allows faster drying and warming of the soil. Long-lasting and maintenance free The maintenance-free face seals on the Catros disc bearings reduce maintenance requirements and ensure high durability at the same time. The individual disc suspension means that the disc bearings are always located in the shadow of the soil flow, to protect them from wear and to generate a better through-passage.
