- Motor Distributors Limited Set To Grow Dealer Network
Talking to the media on this day last week at the launch of XPENG and its debut all-electric G6 SUV model, MDL director, Ciaran Allen spoke of what he called “the ‘scale of opportunity’ that exists for dealers as BYD continues its drive to grow market share in Ireland, and as new-arrival XPENG limbers-up to become another major player on the Irish scene.” Emphasising the focus that Motor Distributors Limited (MDL) is currently placing on its drive to recruit main dealers and expand its network beyond existing levels, Allen noted: “as BYD’s sales volumes to-date show, Irish motorists are ‘responding enthusiastically’ to the cost savings that electric motoring brings, and to the ‘more for less’ value that Chinese-built vehicles deliver.” “Now, with the arrival of XPENG on to the market here, and the launch of its ‘hi-spec’ G6 SUV, the added competition that this new market entrant brings will drive growth and increase customer interest even further,” Allen said. Looking forward, he added: “in numerical terms, XPENG is poised to significantly increase its model offering beyond the G6 model now available. Ahead of us is the promise of their flagship G9 SUV, their P7 Sedan and their P7 Plus Fastback Sedan,” Allen added. “With BYD, the future is similarly positive with five new models in the pipeline. They are a Sealion 7 SUV; an all-new ATTO 2 – partner model for the ATTO 3 which won the Continental ‘Best Compact SUV of the Year 2024’ Award; and an attractively-modelled sub-compact BYD Dolphin”. “Also planned is an enlargement of the current BYD Seal range – holder of the 2025 Continental ‘Large Car of the Year 2025’ Award – with the addition of two new arrivals: a hybrid Seal Coupe and Seal Estate models,” Allen said. Currently, BYD dealerships are in operation in Dublin (2), Cork, Limerick, Waterford, Wexford (Enniscorthy), Kerry (Castleisland) and Galway. With the ambition to further increase BYD’s presence on the market – and with the added requirements that the launch of XPENG brings – plans being pursued by MDL allow for what Allen says will be “significant expansion in dealer numbers”.
- Maxol’s Charity Initiative Raises €155,000 For Guide Dog Charities
It was announced this week that Maxol, with the support of its customers and retailers, has raised more than €155,000 to support the training and care of three guide dogs through its inaugural nationwide fundraising campaign, PAWsome (captioned images are attached - credit Naoise Culhane). The initiative, which was launched last year, saw scents turning into cents as thousands of puppy-shaped PAWsome car fresheners were sold, with all proceeds going to Irish Guide Dogs for the Blind in the Republic of Ireland, and Guide Dogs Northern Ireland. It costs €53,000 to breed, train and care for each guide or assistance dog during its working lifetime. With an urgent need to add to the current 360+ working dogs, Ireland’s guide dog charities are continually seeking funding to assist people who are visually impaired. Irish Guide Dogs for the Blind also supports children with autism to achieve independence, confidence and greater mobility through their Assistance Dog Programme. Maxol staff will have the privilege of naming two of the puppies, and the third will be named by the Maxol team at Maxol Dooradoyle in Limerick, who raised the highest amount of funds during the PAWsome campaign. All three puppies will now undergo training at the charities’ training centres, where a team of expert instructors will equip the new owners and their future guide or assistance dog with everyday skills, from crossing roads to using public transport and vet care. The 2024 PAWsome Fresheners campaign was the first step towards Maxol’s goal of training six guide or assistance dogs over two years. Brian Donaldson, CEO of Maxol highlighted the life-changing impact of a highly-trained and intuitive guide or assistance dog saying: “We’re incredibly proud to support these amazing charities that do such wonderful work at both a national and community level. Supporting this special journey from puppy to guide or assistance dog is a wonderful initiative to be part of and raising €155,000 with the support of our customers and retailers has exceeded our expectations.” Brian also pointed out that guide and assistance dogs not only help to bolster confidence but that the safety and social benefits they bring to their owners are invaluable too. “I’ve seen firsthand the incredible and vital support these dogs provide and I’m grateful to all our valued customers, colleagues, our retailers and their staff who have supported this brilliant cause. We look forward to the next phase of our fundraising efforts and fulfilling our promise to sponsor three more puppies in 2025.” Tim O’Mahony, CEO of Irish Guide Dogs for the Blind, said: “The fundraising from the PAWsome Fresheners campaign is truly transformative. It helps us to offer greater independence to our clients, and their families, and creates more supportive and inclusive communities. Many visually impaired individuals face isolation and challenges in everyday activities, such as shopping, working, and socialising and guide dogs provide a vital lifeline. Similarly, for children with autism, assistance dogs serve as a calming presence, aiding in behaviour regulation and enhancing social skills and confidence. I’d like to extend a heartfelt thank you to everyone involved for making this achievement possible.” In addition to the PAWsome campaign, a further €25,000 was raised from in-store collection boxes across the country, through the generosity of Maxol customers. Maxol has committed to funding the training of at least six guide and assistance dogs across the island of Ireland over the next two years and will continue to raise awareness and drive support for Irish Guide Dogs for the Blind in the Republic of Ireland and Guide Dogs NI.

- XPENG G6 Coupé SUV Readily Available
Hot on the heels of the revised Tesla Model Y news article yesterday, the latest newcomer to arrive on the Irish EV market is ready to take orders. A new name for EV buyers to embrace, XPENG is poised to mark the spot for that growing body of Irish motorists already convinced of the many advantages that electric motoring offers. Distributed in Ireland by Motor Distributors Limited (MDL), XPENG is totally on-trend and for very appealing reasons all evident in the first model to appear on Irish roads: the ‘ultra-smart’ 4-door, G6 Coupé SUV. Equipped with an alluring range of new features and new ‘know-how’ – much of it a product of their widespread use of AI technology in its development – the G6 Coupé SUV comes in three model variants: a ‘Standard’ range model and a ‘Long Range’ model (both with rear-wheel drive), and a ‘Performance’ model (with permanent all-wheel drive). The Performance model will arrive here in Q3 of this year with both Standard and Long Range models available now for customer delivery. Rear-wheel drive Standard and Long Range versions are powered by a single rear-mounted electric motor with 0-100km/h times rated at 6.9 seconds and 6.7 seconds respectively. G6 Standard Range models (190 kW/258 hp, 440 Nm) are powered by a 66kWh battery pack with a 435 km WLTP driving range, while the Long Range and all-wheel drive Performance versions with their larger 87.5kWh batteries have a longer WLTP range of up to 570kms on a full charge. In addition, Performance units have 0-100kms/h acceleration of just 4.1 seconds helped by an additional electric front wheel motor that boosts output to a combined 476 hp. Optional on all models is an electrically deployable towbar with a towable capacity of 1,500 kgs. Thanks to innovative technology and 800V architecture, plus a high degree of standard equipment, space, and comfort, the XPENG G6 has much to win the hearts of Irish motorists, not least a top speed of 200 km/h for all versions. Here in time for 2025 buyers to consider, the G6 Coupé has a beautiful appearance evident in its coupe-style silhouette, contoured bodywork, forward sloping bonnet, and other aerodynamic features. Eye-catching are its recessed door handles, discreet facia, sporty alloys and imposing rear with full-width taillights, and self-closing boot. Inside, simplicity is the operative term: soft-touch coverings and padding, an unfussy dashboard and centre console, and rear seat spaciousness are the dominant features. Attractive to drivers are its all-round visibility helped by a firm seat and generous windscreen, all housed within a 4.75 meters long, 1.92 meters wide, and 1.65 meters high body with a wheelbase of 2.89 meters. Its 571-litres luggage compartment increases to 1,374-litres with rear seats folded. Features present in every G6 include 20-inch rims with Michelin tyres, a large panoramic glass roof, multi-adjustable, heated and leatherette-covered seats all around, ventilated front seats, a heated steering wheel, four USB ports, two 50W induction charging points for smartphones, a 960W audio system with 18 speakers, and an extensive library of music, video, entertainment and social media apps. As might be expected in a vehicle developed with leading AI technology, touch-button technology is to the fore. A high-tech wonderland, the G6’s alluring exterior conceals an interior that MDL says: ‘will appeal in a way that many will find irresistible’ with voice command supports there to assist driver and passengers as required. Standard within it are driver assistance and operating systems that include blind-spot monitoring and parking assist. All-round camera coverage, 360-degree radar, and numerous other functions are centralised on an operator-friendly touchscreen, all augmented by a digital instrument panel and steering-wheel mounted controls. Other goodies include an infotainment system running on the latest XPENG's Xmart OS operating system (with free over-the-air updates) and a standard heat pump to improve electrical performance and driving range in winter. Competitive Price Launching at what MDL director, Ciaran Allen calls “a compellingly competitive price structure and overall value proposition” , that MDL says takes full account of the model offering itself, and of market conditions generally and the overriding national objective to expand EV ownership, models come on the market from €42,000 (Standard) and €49,440 (Long Range) inclusive of all EV grants and incentives. Sold through XPENG South Dublin with a country-wide network of dealers to follow, XPENG models set to arrive after the G6 Coupé SUV on to the Irish market (on dates not yet arranged) are their flagship G9 SUV, their P7 Sedan, and their ‘graciously elegant’ P7+ Fastback Sedan in all of which AI design and manufacturing technology will continue to be a key aspect.

- Tesla Model Y Preview
Nearly five years ago, the first Model Y units were delivered to their owners, marking the debut of a global best-seller. Today, Tesla is introducing the new Model Y. The new Model Y features extensive reengineering, maximizing efficiency, comfort, connectivity, and safety, with a completely redesigned interior and exterior. Model Y has been produced in over 3.5 million units at Tesla’s Gigafactories across three continents. Since day one, Model Y has been praised globally for its versatility, ease of use, practicality, safety, and efficiency, all at an accessible price point. In 2023, Model Y made history by becoming the first-ever electric vehicle to top the global best-selling vehicle list, across all powertrains and energy types. This is further proof that electric vehicles appeal to a broad audience and are suitable for a wide range of scenarios. Europe was no exception, with Model Y topping regional registration lists and becoming the best-selling vehicle of any kind in the region in 2023, along with numerous local successes. Produced in Europe for Europeans at the Tesla Berlin-Brandenburg Gigafactory since 2022, Model Y has already had a significant impact on transitioning the local fleet to sustainable transport, in line with Tesla’s mission. With the introduction of the new Model Y, Tesla builds on a global best-selling platform to bring a new benchmark to the market. Considering the feedback from owners, Tesla’s engineering and design teams have developed the new Model Y incorporating significant improvements in refinement, premium-ness and ergonomics in every area, while not departing from what made it a global bestseller. The new Model Y is designed with a focus on ride comfort while retaining the agility and connection Tesla is known for. Building on the improvements brought to Upgraded Model 3, new chassis settings and attributes provide a high-level of comfort to all passengers, without compromising handling. The new Model Y features a fully redesigned exterior that offers exceptional aerodynamic efficiency, high-speed stability, crash safety, and build quality. Differentiating from Model 3, the front and rear lightbars draw on Cybertruck and Cybercab designs. The front lightbar introduces a new distinctive look and supports adaptive headlights. The rear light bar spans across the vehicle, making it not only one of the largest lightbars in the industry, but also the world-first production application of an indirect, externally reflected lighting system that projects the rear lamp function onto a custom applique. The exterior redesign has reduced the overall drag and combined with new wheels featuring improved aerodynamics and low-resistance tires, it leads to enhanced range. Model Y was already the most efficient SUV in its class. By carefully reworking every energy-consuming subsystem, Tesla has unlocked significant improvements in energy efficiency, resulting in real-world gains for owners without additional costs. A new front camera is now available, located in the front fascia. It offers drivers an expanded view of the surroundings on the center screen and is equipped with a fluid washer and integrated heating to prevent fogging and defrost in cold weather conditions. Excellence in interior refinement and ambience has been a key focus with the new Model Y. The cabin is enveloped in premium yet durable materials, including aluminum and textile, while customizable ambient lighting is dynamically integrated for both day and night. Additionally, new manufacturing processes provide an elevated level of craftsmanship. With the introduction of acoustic glass on every surface, paired with new sound-dampening materials, the new Model Y offers a whisper quiet ride. Road noise is reduced by 22%, impact noise by 20% and wind noise by 20%. New low-E glass also reflects 26% more solar energy, helping maintain the perfect temperature when combined with a quieter, more efficient air-conditioning system. The two front seats have been redesigned for improved comfort and are now ventilated. The second-row seats also offer enhanced comfort and convenience with easier-to-access buckles, longer cushions, deeper bolsters, with powered recline and fold-flat operation. Both first and second rows are heated, and all are working seamlessly with integrated climate controls. The new center console now features sliding doors with precise, smooth movement, and is covered in genuine aluminum revealing both a cupholder and extra storage. Additional aluminum accents adorn the steering wheel, door trims, and instrument panels. True to its original uncluttered driving experience, the new Model Y includes both haptic switches and physical buttons. Ergonomics and usability are enhanced with customizable steering wheel switches for quick access to frequently used vehicle functions. A new precision-engineered indicator stalk ensures effortless control while driving. Second-row passengers can now enjoy their own 8” touchscreen, featuring integrated climate controls and entertainment options, including gaming, audio, and video streaming. Fast-charge laptops and other portable devices is convenient, with one front and two rear USB-C charging ports, with up to 65W of power. The audio system has been redesigned to offer an even more immersive music listening experience. Some speakers are invisible thanks to an acoustically transparent textile material developed in-house, which compliments the sleek aesthetic of the interior and enhances audio performance. Improvements have also been made to the microphones, for better call quality. Connectivity has reached the next generation with redesigned hardware, delivering a significant boost to cellular performance: 50% faster download speeds and a 30% greater range. Wi-Fi connectivity has also been greatly improved, with download speeds up to 300% faster for smoother video streaming and software updates, and a range extension of up to 200%, ensuring sustained connectivity in areas like garages and driveways. Phone key performance and reliability have seen a 10X improvement, thanks to the addition of Ultra-Wideband and other enhancements, which also enable automatic trunk opening when paired with the Tesla app. As with all Tesla vehicles, these hardware improvements will enable additional features via over-the-air software updates, free of charge for owners, in the future. Starting with a limited edition - new Model Y Launch Series, Long Range All-Wheel Drive, offering 568 km of range, 0 to 100 km/h acceleration in 4.3s, 201 km/h top speed, and specific attributes with custom finishes. The new Model Y will be on display in Ireland, starting 31st January and is already avaialble to order.

- Status Red Weather Warning Issued
The Road Safety Authority (RSA) is urging the public to take extreme caution as a Red Weather Warning has been issued for the unprecedented and life-threatening Storm Éowyn. This is not a typical weather event— it has the potential to be a significant and historic storm that poses a serious risk to life. People are being urged not to travel on Friday during the red weather warning and to avoid unnecessary travel when it passes due to the extremely strong winds which will result in fallen trees and power lines, destruction to property, flying debris, and road blockages. This could also lead to cancellation of events, wave overtopping, coastal flooding in low lying and exposed areas and unsafe working conditions as well as significant structural damage and disruption and cancellations to transport. Met Eireann has issued a status RED Wind warning for 22 counties where Storm Éowyn will bring southerlygale force winds becoming westerly which will bring severe, damaging and destructive gusts in excess of 130km/h. Public safety is paramount. Everyone must act responsibly to protect themselves and others while reducing pressure on emergency services and crews , who will be dealing with and responding to the aftermath of this extremely dangerous and destructive storm. If travel is not essential, stay indoors, secure property, and avoid unnecessary risks. Coastal areas face dangerous storm surges and flooding , and under no circumstances should people put themselves at risk by engaging in storm voyeurism . There is also an ORANGE Wind warning for Ireland as Storm Éowyn will bring gale force southerly winds becoming westerly will bring severe, damaging and destructive gusts of up to 130km/h widely, with even higher gusts for a time. There is also a Yellow Rainfall Warning in place for Cork, Kerry and Waterford where heavy rain could lead to localised flooding. Nationally all road users are being advised to be aware of the dangers once the storm has passed. When the extreme weather passes road users will still have to contend with potentially hazardous road conditions such as flooded roads and downed pylons, lines, trees, branches, and other debris which could block roads. Obey any road closures or diversions put in place by Local Authorities and An Garda Síochána. Where people have to use the roads, the following advice is being given on foot of the weather warnings: Slow down and allow a greater braking distance between themselves and the vehicle in front in wet weather conditions. This is especially important on high-speed roads such as dual carriageways and motorways where there is increased danger of aquaplaning. Take special care when driving behind goods vehicles, as they generate a considerable amount of spray, which reduces your visibility. Hold back to where you can see their mirrors. If the road ahead is flooded, choose another route. Don't attempt to drive through it. Flooded roads that appear shallow could be deeper than you think. The verge may have subsided and there may also be trees or branches that have fallen that may not be visible. Road users should always follow recommended routes and obey signs closing roads to traffic that have been put there by the local council or An Garda Síochána. After going through water, drive slowly with your foot on the brake pedal for a short distance - this helps to dry the brakes. Be Safe. Be Seen. Drive with dipped headlights at all times to ensure that you are visible and that you can see other road users. Beware of objects being blown out onto the road. Expect the unexpected. Watch out for falling / fallen debris on the road and vehicles veering across the road. Control of a vehicle may be affected by strong cross winds. High-sided vehicles and motorcyclists are particularly vulnerable to strong winds Drivers should allow extra space between themselves and vulnerable road users such as people cycling and motorcyclists as they may be blown off course by strong winds. Advice to road users e.g. pedestrians, cyclists and motorcyclists: Walk on the right-hand side of the road, facing traffic if there are no footpaths. People cycling should ensure that they and their bike are visible to other road users by investing in a good set of front and rear lights (white at the front, red at the back) and by wearing clothes that help you be seen on your bike. Consider wearing high visibility material. Take extra care when crossing the road or cycling in extremely windy conditions, as a sudden gust of wind could blow you into the path of an oncoming vehicle. Be Safe. Be Seen. Visibility and light are reduced in poor weather conditions. Keep safe by making sure you can be seen. Wear bright clothing and consider wearing high visibility material. For advice on severe weather driving tips, please see severe weather advice on the RSA website or check out the RSA Facebook and Twitter pages.
- Volkswagen Ireland Prepares for Milestones Year
Volkswagen Group Ireland had a record year in 2024 and is gearing up for a year of milestones in 2025. The company delivered a record breaking 39,178 vehicles in 2024, up 5 per cent on the previous year. In addition, Volkswagen Group Ireland secured a 29.6 per cent total new car market share while nearly one in four electric vehicles sold here was from a Volkswagen Group brand. The arrival of a host of important new vehicles spanning the six Volkswagen Group Ireland brands – Volkswagen Passenger Cars, Audi, CUPRA, Seat, Skoda and Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles – signals a bright future in 2025. Looking back on the past 12 months, Volkswagen Group Ireland and its brands achieved a number of important milestones: Volkswagen Passenger Cars finished 2024 with great momentum, launching the new Tiguan and Golf while achieving an 11.4 per cent total new car market share. In 2025, Volkswagen Ireland will launch a number of important models, including the Tayron SUV, the new T-ROC and, towards the end of the year, the electric ID.2all - the most compact and affordable member of the ID. family to date. To celebrate 75 years in Ireland, Volkswagen has launched a series of special edition “Edition 75” models featuring class leading specifications and unbeatable value for money. Audi retained its crown as Ireland’s best-selling premium brand in 2024. Having launched the most ambitious product offensive in its 114-year history, bosses are predicting another bumper year in 2025. A host of new arrivals will reach these shores over the next 12 months, starting with the all-electric A6 e-tron, the new A7 Avant and Saloon, the new A5 PHEV, the Q3 SUV and Sportback, Q5 PHEV, RS5 PHEV as well as a refreshed Q4 e-tron. The Audi portfolio goes from strength to strength as it strides towards greater sustainability. Škoda shattered sales records in 2024 with a 20 per cent increase in registrations compared to 2023. One of the automotive success stories of the past decade, it finished 2024 as the third best-selling car brand in Ireland. This year, it will welcome a number of next generation PHEV models, including the new Skoda Superb Combi iV and the Kodiaq iV with their electric ranges of 130km and 100km respectively. When it comes to all-electric models, the brand also welcomes the brand-new Skoda Elroq in spring followed by the new model Enyaq and Enyaq Coupe in the summer. SEAT & CUPRA embraced a year of transition in 2024 and embarked on their most important product launches to date. Globally, SEAT sales were up 7.5per cent on 2023 at more than 558,000 units. Meanwhile, CUPRA saw a similar level of growth, delivering more than 248,000 cars worldwide for the first time. The CUPRA Formentor and SEAT Ibiza were the bestselling models for each brand. Both SEAT and CUPRA laid the foundations for expansion in 2025 with the rollout of new dealerships across Ireland. In 2025, SEAT celebrates 75 years as a brand with the launch of the new Leon PHEV 2.0 as well as the updated Arona and Ibiza coming later this year. Meanwhile, the CUPRA range will expand to five models thanks to the addition of the new Terramar and the all-electric Tavascan – two models that will become cornerstones of the CUPRA brand going forward. Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles posted its highest volumes since 2019 thanks to record breaking performances from the Amarok, ID. Buzz and new Crafter in 2024. The brand is poised to add more deliveries this year with the addition of several important new models including the seven-seat ID. Buzz LWB and GTX, the brand-new California camper and the long-awaited Volkswagen Transporter, which is now available with an all-electric option. BEV rollout continues with the arrival of key vehicles Volkswagen Group delivered nearly 745,000 battery electric vehicles worldwide in 2024 and was the undisputed market leader in Europe with a market share of around 21 per cent. In Ireland, it was a similar picture with Volkswagen Group once again the market leader. Nearly one in four electric vehicles sold here in 2024 came from a Volkswagen Group brand. The Group and its brands are predicting even stronger growth in 2025, with sales of electrified vehicles forecast to increase by 35 per cent over the next 12 months. That confidence was underlined by the results of an independent survey on attitudes towards battery electric vehicles commissioned by Volkswagen Group Ireland and published in December. It showed that an overwhelming 85 per cent of EV owners were happy with their vehicles and planned to stay electric when it came to buying their next vehicle. The poll showed major discrepancies between the perceptions of ICE vehicle drivers and the realities experienced by BEV owners, with the former more likely to have concerns about range and frequency of charging than those who are living with EVs day to day. Irish customers can expect even more BEV presence from the country’s leader in electric vehicles in 2025 thanks to the arrival of significant models including the CUPRA Tavascan, the Volkswagen ID.2all, Audi A6 e-tron and Skoda Elroq. Customer choice is key during e-mobility transition While battery electric vehicles are vital to securing ambitious carbon reduction targets, Volkswagen Group acknowledges the need for alternatives suited to motorists who might not be quite ready to make the switch to electric power. Globally, sales of plug-in hybrids grew 5 per cent to 270,000 in 2024 as Volkswagen Group brands welcomed the arrival of second-generation PHEV models with all-electric ranges of up to 143km. Volkswagen Group Ireland expects strong growth in 2025 as more PHEVs come to market, including plug-in versions of the new Volkswagen Tayron, Skoda Kodiaq and Superb, the Audi A3, A5, Q7 and Q8, SEAT Leon and CUPRA Terramar. Investment in aftersales business keeps wheels turning Volkswagen Group and its brands have been a mainstay in the Irish car market for decades. With well over half a million Volkswagen Group vehicles in operation on Irish roads every day, keeping cars on the road is an enormous challenge. Last year, the Group recorded more than €100m worth of parts & accessory sales through around 420,000 workshop throughputs via its network of 84 dealers. Volkswagen Group Ireland invests heavily in its aftersales division and is proud of its certified technicians who ensure cars are kept on the road with the latest digital developments. The Group’s state-of-the-art National Learning Centre opened its doors in 2015 and is a centre of excellence for the next generation of technicians and high-voltage experts. A year of anniversaries in 2025 Volkswagen Group Ireland will celebrate several milestones in 2025, including 130 years of the Skoda brand, 75 years of SEAT and 75 years of Volkswagen in Ireland. In 1950, Ireland became the first country outside of Germany to assemble Volkswagen cars when an almond green Volkswagen Beetle with a 1100CC 25HP engine was assembled in a former tram shed on the Shelbourne Road, Dublin. When the “Ballsbridge Beetle” rolled off the assembly line, it triggered the start of an international success story and the beginning of Volkswagen as an automotive powerhouse. A total of 22M Beetles were made worldwide between 1945 and 2003 but Ireland was well ahead of the curve. Priced at a competitive £IR499 with no added options, just 46 Beetles were sold in that first year on sale here. However, by 1952, the number rose to 2,155 as Irish motorists experienced a wave of “Beetlemania” well before the expression was even coined. The original “Ballsbridge Beetle” will make a return to Ireland this year as part of Volkswagen Ireland’s 75th birthday celebrations, having made the journey from the world famous Autostadt at Volkswagen headquarters in Wolfsburg, Germany. With record sales and a series of milestones in 2025, Volkswagen Group Ireland CEO and Group Managing Director, Pierre Boutin, is predicting a memorable year. He said: “Ireland plays a unique role in the Volkswagen Group story, and I look forward to celebrating some of those historic milestones in 2025. In 1950, who would have thought the humble Beetle would go on to be such a hit? As we mark 75 years in Ireland, we continue to strive for the same pioneering spirit that made it one of the greatest automotive success stories of all time. Our 2024 successes lay the foundations for 2025. We have already begun the most significant transformation in our history as we march towards sustainable e-mobility. In 2025, we are determined to deliver record numbers of electric vehicles and help Ireland move towards its sustainability goals.”

- Volkswagen ID.7 Pro S Covers Staggering 941 km
Volkswagen has reached a new efficiency milestone on a circuit in Nardò, southern Italy: an ID.7 Pro S with a standard technology package and 210 kW (286 PS) covered a distance of 941 kilometres on just one battery charge (86 kWh net). This significantly exceeded the model’s maximum WLTP range (combined) of up to 709 kilometres by 232 kilometres or 32.7 percent. During the 941-kilometre tour, the ID.7 Pro S had an average consumption of just 9.2 kWh/100 km – an exceptionally low figure. Converted to a diesel equivalent, the average consumption achieved in Nardò corresponds to about just 1 litre per 100 km. The aim of the test in Nardò was to determine the maximum efficiency of the ID.7 Pro S introduced in 2024. 9.2 kWh/100 km. The test drive with the new ID.7 Pro S was completed in December by Volkswagen Driving Experience pro drivers on the Low Speed Ring in Nardò at ambient temperatures of 5 to 15 degrees Celsius. The 12.5-kilometre circuit enables a wide range of traffic scenarios and endurance tests to be simulated effectively. The average speed during the efficiency test was 29 km/h, which corresponds to typical rush hour speeds in large cities. According to the latest “Traffic Index” from navigation specialist TomTom, this figure ranges from 22 km/h (Hamburg) to 31 km/h (Amsterdam). Extremely efficient overall vehicle. The ID.7 Pro S with an 86-kWh battery (net) is designed as a series production model for the greatest possible efficiency and has one of the highest ranges in its class of electric vehicle. And the test car did not undergo any form of technical modification for the test, but instead came from current production at the Emden electromobility plant. The foundations for the extraordinary efficiency of the ID.7 Pro S are the strong strong aerodynamics and state-of-the-art drive system. The drag coefficient is a low 0.23 (depending on equipment). The innovative, high-efficiency drive, known as the “APP550”, is as economical as it is powerful. The electric drive motor integrated into the rear axle develops a maximum torque of 545 newton metres, enables the ID.7 to consume between 16.2 and 13.6 kWh/100 km in the official WLTP cycle and still accelerates the ID.7 Pro S from standstill to 100 km/h in a sporty 6.6 seconds if required. The ID.7 Pro S also charges particularly quickly while on the road thanks to a DC charging capacity of up to 200 kW. With this charging capacity, it takes on energy for a further 244 kilometres in just 10 minutes. At full DC charging capacity, the battery is charged from 10 to 80 per cent in about 26 minutes. Be it the ID.7 Saloon or ID.7 Tourer – both variants are ideal for families and long-distance drivers: With plenty of space and a high level of comfort, they impress with their long all-electric ranges. Martin Sander, member of the Board of Management responsible for Sales, Marketing, After Sales at the Volkswagen brand: “We are seeing a positive trend in incoming orders in Europe and are currently selling more ID.7 models than Passat. This shows that the ID.7 is a meaningful all-electric addition to the brand’s product portfolio and, in addition to our successful Passat, is also suitable for long distance drivers and as a company car.”
- Petrol & Diesel Costs Show Further Increase
In the most recent Irish Fuel Survey conducted by the AA we can see it's not good news for combustion powered cars with an increase in petrol and diesel prices for January. According to the survey, petrol prices have risen by 2 cents to an average of €1.76 per litre, while diesel prices have increased by 3 cents to €1.73 per litre. The rise in fuel prices follows an increase in crude oil prices, from $73 to $82 per barrel. Electric vehicle owners however got some good news with electricity rates decreasing this month. The average cost to cover 17,000 km annually for EV drivers is now €811.20 which is a further reduction compared to the previous survey reports. Elena Leao, Marketing & PR, AA (Ireland), said, "It’s disappointing to see petrol and diesel prices rise again this month, as motorists continue to feel the strain. However, it’s positive news for EV drivers who are seeing a decrease in their annual costs. We advise all motorists, whether in petrol, diesel, or EV vehicles, to stay informed and look for opportunities to reduce costs by using energy-efficient driving practices and monitoring energy rates.” Maintaining your vehicle properly and reducing driving speed can help improve fuel efficiency and performance. "Simple things like checking your tyre pressure and thread depth, fluid levels, and removing unnecessary weight can all make a significant difference in fuel efficiency. Regular servicing is recommended to improve fuel efficiency by keeping key components such as the engine, air filters, and tyres in optimal condition. A well-maintained engine runs more smoothly and uses fuel more efficiently.” Leao added.
