- Škoda & Certa Join Forces To Push Low-Emission HVO Biofuel
Škoda Ireland and Certa have recently launched a new joint campaign aimed at encouraging owners and would-be buyers of new diesel cars to use HVO biofuel to lower their motoring carbon emissions by up to 90%. The leading car brand and one of Ireland’s largest fuel suppliers are partnering on the initiative aimed at creating awareness of the benefits of using hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO) as a replacement for diesel. As part of the awareness and promotional campaign, Škoda is providing buyers of diesel Škoda models with a Certa HVO biofuel voucher of either €250 or €500 depending on the model of car purchased. The promotion will apply to cars purchased in the month of March. HVO biofuel is a relatively new fuel and is usually sold at a slightly higher cost than diesel. Certa currently has an offer which matches the price of HVO with that of diesel. The company, which is part of DCC plc, has also announced plans today to introduce new HVO pumps at more forecourts throughout the country. Certa is in the process of upgrading its network of 41 unmanned, pay@pump forecourts to offer HVO at all fuel pumps alongside other fuels. HVO is currently available at Certa forecourts in Liffey Valley in Dublin, Lee Tunnel in Cork and Trim in Meath. Certa is planning to have seven more forecourts HVO-ready by the end of this year. The forecourts planned to be fitted with HVO pumps are located in Dundrum, Tallaght and Finglas in Dublin, Maynooth in Kildare, Letterkenny in Donegal and Athlone and Mullingar in Westmeath. As part of the campaign, Škoda will also run radio, social and outdoor ads effective immediately. The ads and the awareness campaign will seek to alert diesel motorists to the availability and benefits of HVO as an alternative fuel to diesel. HVO is a second generation low-carbon biofuel that serves as a direct replacement for regular diesel without any need for vehicle or engine modifications. It is produced using waste plant-matter and hydrogen, which means it does not release any additional carbon emissions into the atmosphere and can result in a 90% net reduction in CO2 emissions. HVO is distinguished at fuel pumps through the use of a pink nozzle, which stands out from the black diesel and green petrol ones. In Ireland, HVO is expected to meet a large proportion of the increase in biofuel supply to decarbonise the transport sector and is considered a vital transition fuel as electric powered vehicles continue to become more mainstream. HVO can be used as a direct replacement for diesel in a wide variety of fleet, plant and machinery equipment in addition to passenger cars. It can also be mixed with diesel in any ratio. The performance of diesel engines using HVO is near identical to when they are fuelled with diesel. As a leading car manufacturer, Škoda is acutely aware that sales of diesel and petrol-powered cars are scheduled to end in 2035 and that pure electric cars are now clearly the best and most sustainable option for new car buyers. The brand already sells hybrid and plug-in hybrid vehicles as well as two electric-only models, with plans to offer six electric-only models by 2026. Škoda, however, also recognises the status and potentially important role of HVO as a transition fuel and a cleaner alternative to diesel and, as such, is seeking to encourage both existing owners of diesel cars and any buyers of new diesel cars to consider HVO as an alternative. HVO is recognised by the Irish government as a 100% replacement for conventional diesel with greenhouse gas reduction benefits. Diesel-powered cars accounted for 22% of the passenger car market in 2023, just ahead of electric on 19%. While sales of electric cars have increased and the market share of diesel cars has fallen over time, diesel-powered cars are still favoured by many motorists while there is a high number of diesel cars already in the national fleet. Škoda is a market leader when it comes to diesel passenger car sales with a 22% share of the diesel car market. As part of the HVO awareness campaign, Škoda has launched an online vehicle checker where owners of diesel Škoda models can enter their registrations to confirm their car’s HVO-readiness. The tracker and more information on HVO can be found online here . Škoda has also confirmed that all new Škoda diesel models will be HVO-ready and all diesel models manufactured from mid-2021 are HVO-ready. While most modern diesels can operate using HVO without any changes, owners are advised to confirm their cars HVO-readiness by contacting their manufacturer. John Donegan, Brand Director at Škoda Ireland, said: “We are excited to partner with Certa on this campaign, which aims to encourage existing owners or buyers of new diesel cars to use HVO as an alternative to diesel. At Škoda, we recognise the importance of switching to electric cars, but we also recognise that many buyers are still choosing diesel models for a variety of reasons. They may not have access to a home charger, for example, or they may want a car with an extensive range. For these motorists, it makes sense to switch to HVO as the fuel becomes more widely available. We believe diesel car owners will consider this switch if they are made aware of the benefits of HVO and we hope our promotional and marketing campaign will increase awareness among not just Škoda owners, but all owners of diesel cars.” Andrew Graham, Managing Director of Certa said: “We are delighted to work with Škoda on this campaign. At Certa, our goal is to make it easy for motorists to transition to HVO as a renewable alternative to diesel. HVO’s benefits are well established, so we believe drivers of diesel cars will switch to HVO if they are encouraged to do so and if they understand that it works as a drop-in replacement without the need for modifications. By switching to HVO, these motorists will reduce their own carbon footprint, but they will also help to lower the emissions of the country’s transport sector. “Most modern diesel cars are HVO-ready, but we would advise all owners to check with the manufacturer of their car to make sure this is the case. Once this is confirmed, all they have to do is fill up their car using our HVO pumps, which we are now installing alongside existing petrol and diesel pumps at a growing number of our forecourts. As part of the campaign, we have announced our plans to widen the availability of HVO by increasing the number of HVO-ready forecourts from three to ten by year end. As it is a new fuel, HVO is usually sold at a slightly higher price than diesel. This is a small price to pay given the benefits, but at Certa we are currently matching the price of HVO to the price of diesel.”
- 10 Tips For Buying a Used Car
Buying a used car can be a daunting task, especially with so many options available on the market. However, with the right research and preparation, you can find a reliable car that meets your needs and fits your budget. Here are 10 tips to help you navigate the used car market and make an informed purchase on DoneDeal.ie Understanding The Used Car Market Before you start shopping for a used car, it's important to know which models are popular in Ireland. This can help you make an informed decision and find a car that has a good track record. You can check the DoneDeal web listings and read the DoneDeal Blog or watch our YouTube channel for insights on popular models. Identifying The Best Time To Buy A Used Car Timing is crucial when it comes to buying a used car. Generally, prices are lower during the summer months as demand is lower due to the weather. However, during winter months, prices can be higher as more people are looking for cars. You can also look out for dealer promotions and end-of-year sales through our trusted dealer network. It's worth noting that buying a used car during the summer months can have its advantages. For example, if you are looking for a car that is suitable for winter driving, such as a 4x4 or an SUV, you are more likely to find a good deal during the summer months when demand is lower and vice versa for the likes of a convertible. Another factor to consider when buying a used car is the age of the car. Generally, the older the car, the lower the price. However, it's important to remember that older cars may require more maintenance and repairs, which can add to the overall cost of ownership. On the other hand, newer cars may be more expensive, but they may come with a warranty or service plan, which can save you money in the long run. Ultimately, the best time to buy a used car depends on your individual needs and preferences. By doing your research and keeping an eye out for deals and promotions, you can find a great used car that meets your needs and fits your budget. Setting Your Budget & Financing Options Knowing your budget is crucial before embarking on the journey of purchasing a used car. It's essential to avoid overspending and ensure that you can afford the car you choose. However, setting a budget is not just about determining how much you can afford to spend on the car itself. It's also important to factor in other expenses that come with owning a car, such as insurance, maintenance, and fuel costs. When setting your budget, it's always a good idea to do some research and find out the average prices of the cars that you're interested in. This will help you set a realistic budget and avoid overpaying for a vehicle. You can easily use DoneDeal to compare prices and find the best deal. Exploring Financing Options If you're considering financing your used car, it's essential to explore your options and find the best deal. Financing a car is a significant financial commitment, so it's crucial to find a competitive offer that meets your needs. One option for financing your car is to go through a bank or credit union. They often offer lower interest rates than dealerships, and you can get pre-approved for a loan before you start shopping for a car. Another option is to finance through the dealership. Many dealerships offer financing options, and some even have special deals and promotions. When exploring financing options, it's crucial to read the terms and conditions carefully. Be sure to factor in the interest rate and fees when comparing different offers. It's also essential to consider the length of the loan and your monthly payments. You want to make sure that you can comfortably afford the payments and that the loan term fits your needs. Overall, setting your budget and exploring financing options are essential steps in the car-buying process. By doing your research and being mindful of your finances, you can find the best deal and ensure that you're making a wise investment. What Exactly Is PCP and Is It Available On Used Cars? PCP is a purchase plan, so it’s geared towards you owning the car at some point. It is not a lease deal even though the option to walk away is available; your initial deposit/equity will be lost. It is predominately offered on new cars but many dealerships are now offering PCP for used stock also. It works best if you are happy to stay with one brand and you secure a lower percentage on your repayments. If you don’t, a finance or lease plan might be a better option. Choosing The Right Car For Your Needs When buying a used car, it's important to consider your lifestyle and driving habits. For example, if you have a long commute, a fuel-efficient car would be ideal. If you have a family, a spacious car with ample legroom and storage space would be more suitable. Assess your needs and choose a car that suits you. Comparing Fuel Efficiency and Running Costs Fuel efficiency and running costs are essential to consider before you make a purchase. This will help you save money in the long run and avoid high maintenance costs. You can check the car's fuel economy rating and research the cost of parts and repairs online. Finding a Reputable Seller When buying a used car on DoneDeal , you can choose to buy from a dealership or a private seller. Both options have their advantages and disadvantages. Dealerships tend to offer more variety and financing options but may be more expensive. Private sellers may offer lower prices but will not offer warranties or financing options. The DoneDeal Trusted Dealer Programme celebrates exceptional dealers by displaying a trust badge on their stock, signifying that they are a dealership where people can buy with confidence. - Steady Fuel Prices Recorded For March
Monitoring the cost of petrol, diesel, and electricity is crucial for Irish motorists to manage their expenses effectively. It allows individuals to plan their budgets, identify potential savings, and adjust travel habits. Staying informed also helps drivers make environmentally conscious decisions by considering fuel-efficient or electric vehicles, contributing to both financial and ecological sustainability. The latest AA Ireland Fuel Survey shows that petrol and diesel prices have remained steady for March, following recent increases in previous months. For EV drivers there is positive news as the average cost has dropped a further 3 cents compared to last month due to applied discounts on standard rates. Elena Leao, Marketing & PR at AA Ireland, commented, "Stable fuel prices may offer some relief for motorists, but with ongoing cost-of-living pressures, it’s always worth finding ways to stretch every euro at the pump. Simple habits like anticipating traffic flow to avoid harsh braking and acceleration and ensuring your vehicle is serviced regularly can make a real difference over time." Leao also highlighted how EV drivers are seeing slight reductions in costs. "The decrease in EV running costs is welcome news. As more drivers make the switch to electric, understanding charging plans and maximising off-peak rates can result in even greater savings."

- Insurance Appeal For Driver License Numbers
AA Ireland is issuing an urgent appeal to motorists to update their driver numbers on their car insurance policies, as a legal requirement is set to take effect in just a few weeks. Despite the significance of this change, there has been very little media coverage to date. Many drivers remain unaware that failure to provide their driver number in advance of their renewal date by 31st March 2025 will mean they cannot renew their car insurance. Under the Road Traffic and Roads Act 2023, all insurers and intermediaries acting on their behalf must ensure that they collect driver number data and validate it against the Department’s national vehicle database. This change is a legal requirement, and it applies to all car insurance policies transacted in Ireland, regardless of the insurance provider. Failure to provide the driver number will mean motorists will not be able to renew their car insurance. Drivers will need to provide all driver numbers, including those of additional named drivers, if they are changing insurers or adjusting an existing policy, such as adding a named driver. Elena Leao, Marketing & PR, AA Ireland, said, “We are now just weeks away from this change coming into effect, yet awareness remains alarmingly low. Many drivers could find themselves unable to renew their car insurance simply because they were not properly informed. There is a real risk that motorists will be caught out at renewal time, something that could have serious consequences, including being unable to legally drive their vehicle.” This update must be done before the issue of an insurance policy, and the data must then be transferred to the Irish Motor Insurance Database (IMID). The main objective of the IMID is to keep uninsured drivers off Irish roads. An Garda Síochána can access the IMID through their mobility devices, enabling them to identify drivers without insurance. The addition of driver numbers will further strengthen road safety initiatives in Ireland. The AA welcomes and commends this initiative. “This is an important step for road safety, but it is crucial that motorists act now. If you haven’t updated your driver number yet, don’t wait until renewal. Check your policy today to ensure you’re compliant before the deadline,” Leao added. The driver number can be found in field 4d on the front of the Irish plastic card licence. It contains nine digits and no letters. Foreign driving licenses may vary in format and location.

- Used EV Market Turns Corner: Prices Show First Monthly Growth Since the Beginning of 2023
About this DoneDeal Motors Report DoneDeal Motors is the largest car website in Ireland, listing 9 out of 10 cars advertised online from car dealerships nationwide. In February 2025, there are over 64,000 cars from dealerships on site with over 4,000 of these being fully electric cars. Key Highlights: The latest car price index from DoneDeal Motors, Ireland’s largest car site, has found that Ireland's used electric vehicle (EV) market is showing signs of recovery and stability, with used EV prices now more affordable than equivalent diesel and hybrid models. This shift marks a significant turning point in the Irish automotive landscape, as prices of used EVs have now stabilised following the influx of new EV models in the last 3 years along with increasing demand for used EVs (Demand up 29% in last 12 months, DoneDeal proprietary data). Positive Price Growth : January 2025 saw a 1% monthly price inflation for used EVs, the first positive monthly growth since the beginning of 2023, indicating a used EV market stabilisation compared with previous used EV pricing declines. EVs are more affordable: Used EVs are now 11.2% cheaper than comparable diesel cars and 12.7% cheaper than equivalent hybrid models on a like-for-like basis. EVs are still more expensive than petrol models: EVs remain 11% more expensive than their petrol equivalents. However, the price difference between used EVs and petrol cars is rapidly narrowing, from 30% in 2022 to just 10.7% in the second half of 2024. Market Stabilisation: After sharp price drops throughout 2023 and early 2024, the rate of used EV price deflation has slowed significantly, with the lowest quarterly rate (1.8% in Q4 2024) since the beginning of 2023. Record New EV Registrations: January 2025 also saw a record month for new EV registrations, with 4,925 units registered, a 20% increase compared to January 2024, (SIMI) Increased Consumer Demand: Greater selection and affordability of EVs have reignited interest in EVs, with demand for 1-4 year old EVs on DoneDeal up 29% year on year (January 2025 versus January 2024). Commenting on the report’s findings, Rob Hume, General Manager of DoneDeal said, “Between 2022 and 2024, Ireland saw the introduction of numerous more technologically advanced, and more affordable new electric vehicles (EVs). This wave of new EVs has had a knock on effect on the used EV market with significant corresponding reductions in advertised prices for used EVs during the same period. A combination of factors—continued growth in EV demand, a more established used market, and a slowdown in new EV price competition—now appears to have stabilised used EV prices after several years of decreases. The significant price correction we've seen in the used EV market in recent years has resulted in unprecedented affordability, making electric vehicles a viable option for a wider range of Irish consumers. This affordability, coupled with the growing availability of second-hand EVs, is a crucial step towards broader EV adoption and a more sustainable transportation future in Ireland." Key Findings: Petrol and Diesel Vehicle Market Inflation Easing: Annual inflation for internal combustion engine (ICE) cars has significantly eased to 0.7% in Q4 2024. This is the lowest rate since 2019, indicating a recovery from pandemic and Brexit-related inflationary pressures. Supply Recovery: The stabilisation is largely attributed to a rebound in new car supply and import activity during 2023-2024. This increased supply has positively impacted the used ICE car market resulting in price stabilisation. Used Car Imports Increase: Used car imports increased by 21% in 2024 to over 60,000 but still remain 46% below 2019 levels of 113,000. A significant change has happened in the source of the imports - 75% of imports are now from non-UK sources, a stark contrast to 2019, when 95% of all imports were UK-sourced vehicles. Supply Growth: The supply of used cars on DoneDeal increased by 4% in 2024. Price Divergence: Overall price trends remained relatively stable throughout 2024. However, a sharp divergence emerged between market segments, prices for lower-end vehicles (under €6,500) increased by 2.3%. Prices for premium vehicles (over €20,000) decreased by 1.7%. DoneDeal Car Price Index: Ireland’s transportation landscape is undergoing a significant shift, with electric vehicles (EVs) evolving from a niche market—representing just 2% of new car registrations (3,443 units) in 2019—to mainstream adoption, capturing 15.9% (19,235 units) by 2024. This surge, driven by technological advancements, fuel savings, government incentives, and environmental awareness, saw registrations rise sharply which have now begun to translate into the used car market, with over 4,200 EVs currently for sale on DoneDeal, compared to approximately 1,500 in Q1 2023. Over the past three years, Ireland’s used electric vehicle (EV) market has experienced significant price volatility, reflecting the interplay of shifting consumer demand, supply dynamics, and broader economic forces. Using DoneDeal data, we can develop a mix-adjusted price index specifically for used EVs in Ireland. In 2022, prices surged as global supply chain disruptions, semiconductor shortages, and soaring demand for greener transport options squeezed availability, creating a seller’s market for early EV adopters. However, by mid 2023 and into 2024, used EV prices in Ireland fell sharply by an average of 3% per quarter and as much as 5.8% by mid 2024. This was due to a combination of factors: Increased competition in new EV market resulting in price cuts, an influx of second-hand EVs, reduction in grants, EV misinformation, and a lagging charging infrastructure which dampened demand and pushed prices down. Rolling 12 month % Share of New Registrations by Fuel Type (SIMI) A consequence of this correction phase was that used EV prices dropped to more affordable levels, and we reported in our last report that EVs had become cheaper than equivalent diesel and hybrid models on a like for like basis. By the end of 2024 the greater selection and affordability of EVs reignited interest among cost-conscious consumers. Used EV price deflation slowed to its lowest quarterly rate (1.5%) since the beginning of 2023, a sign that the market is finally turning a corner. Preliminary DoneDeal and SIMI data from the start of 2025 seems to support this. In January, monthly price inflation for used EVs was 1%, the first positive monthly price growth since the beginning of 2023. New EV registrations also has a record month in January 2025. SIMI’s latest report on new car registration indicates that some 4,925 EVs were registered in the Republic last month, a single-month record and up 20% on January 2024. The key takeaway from this price adjustment is that EV prices are decreasing, making them more accessible. This is encouraging from an emissions standpoint, as greater affordability and a growing second-hand market are likely to drive broader EV adoption over time. However, Ireland’s 2030 EV adoption targets remain unlikely to be achieved without a significant shift in consumer behavior. Accelerating the rollout of charging infrastructure and more specifically targeted financial incentives for both used and new EV buyers would be critical to driving this transition. DoneDeal Used EV and Hybrid Cars Price Index 2020 - Jan 2025 Source: DoneDeal Price Index Data, 2020-2025 EVs are now more affordable than diesel and hybrid cars Significant price drops in EVs have made them more affordable than diesel and hybrid cars on a like-for-like basis. While they still cost more than petrol cars, the gap is closing quickly. The high upfront cost, once a major barrier to EV adoption, is becoming less of an issue. By analysing extensive data from DoneDeal listings, we can track how the price differences between EVs and other fuel types have evolved in recent years. Analysing a sample of used cars under five years old on DoneDeal reveals how EV prices have declined relative to diesel and hybrid cars. In 2022, EVs were, on average, 10.2% more expensive than comparable diesel cars. By 2023, as EV prices dropped, this gap narrowed to 2.6%. In the second half of 2024, EVs have become 11.2% cheaper than diesel cars and 12.7% cheaper than equivalent hybrid models on a like-for-like basis. The price difference between EVs and petrol cars is also narrowing. In 2022, an EV was nearly 30% more expensive than a comparable petrol car (considering factors like age, mileage, and make). In the second half of 2024, this gap has narrowed to 10.7%. Average price differences for used EV cars versus other fuel types over the past three years We took a sample of used cars less than 5 years old on DoneDeal and compared the difference in price between EVs and other fuel types on a like-for-like basis (holding make, car age, and mileage etc constant). The table below shows how the difference in prices has changed over the past three years as EV prices have fallen. Source: DoneDeal Data, 2022-2024 Broader Market Trends: Internal Combustion Engine (ICE) Cars The petrol and diesel vehicle market is showing signs of recovery from the inflationary pressures triggered by the pandemic and Brexit. Annual inflation for internal combustion engine (ICE) cars eased to 0.7% in Q4 2024, marking the lowest rate since 2019. This stabilisation stems largely from a rebound in new car supply and import activity during 2023–2024, which subsequently spilled over into the used car market. New car registrations dipped slightly to 121,199 in 2024, down 1% from 121,850 in 2023. However, sales remained 15% and 16% higher than 2022 and 2021 levels, respectively. Meanwhile, used car imports surged to 61,583 in 2024, surpassing 60,000 for the first time since 2019 and reflecting steady growth from 46,490 (2022) and 50,717 (2023). This resurgence has been fueled by a notable shift toward non-UK imports, which accounted for 75% of total imports in 2024—a stark contrast to 2019, when UK-sourced vehicles dominated at 95%. Despite this recovery, import volumes remain subdued compared to pre-pandemic figures (117,047 in 2019 vs. 61,583 in 2024, per SIMI data). Demand for used cars, measured by ad views on DoneDeal, declined by 15% in the second half of 2024 compared to the first six months of the year. However, Q4 2024 saw a rebound, with demand rising 20% year-on-year relative to Q4 2023. Meanwhile, supply of used cars on the platform grew by 4% across 2024, peaking in the third quarter before moderating. Price trends remained steady overall, with quarterly inflation hovering between -1% and +1% throughout the year. However, a sharp divergence emerged between market segments: Prices for lower-end vehicles (under ~€6,500) rose by 2.3%, while the premium segment (over €20,000) saw deflation of 1.7%. - BMW M235 xDrive Gran Coupé
Written by Justin Delaney, an Independent Reviewer, Journalist , and Motor expert. We were back in the driver seat of the new BMW M235 xDrive Gran Coupé in sunny Spain recently. This machine represents an attempt to infuse BMW’s Motorsport DNA into a front-wheel-drive based platform that could tempt ‘M’ fans into a slightly cheaper alternative priced at €70,395. While not an entirely new model, it brings extensive revisions to its predecessor’s platform, incorporating substantial technological advancements, key mechanical upgrades, and a fully redesigned exterior and interior. To look at, the M235 xDrive Gran Coupé is stylish and modern. Its aggressive design cues, sharp LED headlights, and large air intakes give it that hint of performance. The rear design is arguably its strongest angle, with slim taillights, a sculpted boot lid, and dual exhaust tips which, in our opinion, looks even better than the M2. Frameless doors provide an elegant touch and reinforce its coupé-like profile whilst the side profile features an elongated front overhang that makes it pretty easy on the eye. The interior is well-appointed, featuring BMW’s latest Curved Display and an array of modern driver aids. However, start adding optional extras, M Performance add-ons, premium technology packs, larger wheels and the price rapidly climbs to a level pretty close to the 3 Series. Our test car had the standard M Sport seats with Alcantara/Sensatec upholstery, offering enhanced side bolstering. The newly designed M leather steering wheel was a nice touch and the seats had the optional Vernasca leather and Alcantara upholstery for a more luxurious feel. Overall, the BMW M235 xDrive interior blends sportiness with modern luxury, offering a high-tech, driver-focused cabin. So what engine options will Irish buyers have? Well the range starts with the 220 M Sport featuring a 1.5-litre three-cylinder petrol engine producing 170 hp and 280 Nm of torque. It accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 7.9 seconds and reaches a top speed of 230 km/h. Next up is the mid offering 223 xDrive Gran Coupé equipped with a 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol engine featuring 48-volt mild-hybrid technology. This gives you a combined output of 218 horsepower and 360 Nm of torque. Paired with a 7-speed automatic transmission and BMW's xDrive all-wheel-drive system, the vehicle accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 6.4 seconds and achieves a top speed of 250 km/h. Our test car as mentioned was the M235 xDrive powered by a 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol engine. With 300 hp on tap and 400 Nm of torque it sprints from 0 to 100 km/h in 4.9 seconds and has a top speed of 249 km/h. The combined fuel consumption sits between 7.4 to 8.2 l/100 km, which is easily believable from our time with the vehicle. The 2 Series Gran Coupé lineup will no longer features a diesel offering for Ireland. To drive it would be remiss of us not to mention its sibling, the MINI Countryman JCW. While the two share their fundamental mechanical underpinnings, the BMW commands a price premium but it is also a touch sharper to drive. The BMW’s lower kerb weight of 1,623kg compared to the Countryman JCW’s 1,741kg translates into a sharper, more agile driving feel. Through the twisty mountain pass, the M235i boasts quicker turn-in and generally feels livelier on the road. The seven-speed dual-clutch transmission (DCT) offers a more refined shifting experience when under load and the optional four-piston brakes add decent stopping power, particularly useful on demanding roads! Whilst overall it might not deliver the rear-wheel-drive-biased experience long associated with BMW’s M Division, it is enjoyable to drive! The big question is, will it sell here in Ireland? For us the entry-level 220 M Sport Gran Coupé priced at roughly €47,500 offers the perfect gateway into the BMW brand at a lower price point and still looks great. The M235 does provide strong performance and all-wheel-drive capability for considerably less than a similarly specced 3 Series but for driving purists, its front-wheel-drive biased roots might force you to consider the MINI Countryman JCW with the same underpinnings for considerably less. On paper, the M235 ticks all the M Performance boxes: a more powerful engine, aggressive styling, and a reworked chassis making it an attractive option for those seeking a junior M car, but will it be enough to tempt Irish buyers? Only time will tell.
