- February Tractor Registrations continue good start to the year
The latest figures issued by the Farm Tractor & Machinery Trade Association in relation to registrations of tractors and other types of self-propelled machinery cover the month of February and show a continuation of the very strong start to the year for registrations of both new and used import tractors. There were 319 new tractors registered during February which was an increase of some 39% on the same month in 2020. A total of 797 new tractors have been registered in the first two months of this year, up 21% on the comparable figure of 658 units a year previously. The three counties with the highest levels of registrations over the first two months were Cork, Tipperary and Wexford with 107, 70 and 50 units registered respectively. Leitrim was the county with the lowest level of registrations, with 7 units up to the end of February. The 101 to 140 hp range is the horse power band with the highest level of registrations with 426 units, or over 53%, of all registrations in the first two months. During the period in question, only 8% of all tractors registered were of 100hp or less and 25% were of over 160 hp. Registrations of used imported tractors continued at high levels during February with 460 such units registered during the month bringing the total for the first two months of 2021 to 968 units. February of 2020 saw 256 used imports registered with a total for the first two months of last year of 556 units giving a year on year increase to the end last month of 74%. Telehandler registrations saw somewhat of an improvement in February after a challenging year in 2020 which saw an 18% reduction in registrations in comparison to 2019. There were 48 new telehandlers registered in February, a 9% drop on the same month of last year. The total of such registrations for the first two months of this year was 115 units, down 29% on the corresponding figure of 161 units in 2020. Wheeled loader registrations started the year with a significant year on year decrease in January but were still quite strong in a longer term context. The immediate situation improved in February with 19 new units registered, up 7 machines on February of 2020. The year on year picture is down about 5% on the same point in 2020 with a total of 35 units registered to the 37 units after the first two months of 2020. Backhoe loader registrations saw a difficult year in 2020 with an annual decrease of over 50%. January of this year saw an improvement with 9 machines registered, up from 6 a year earlier. This positive move continued into February with another 9 machines registered in comparison to 4 units in 2020. The total of 18 units in the first two months compares well to the 10 units of a year ago. Source: FTMA #Farming
- Low Risk/High Return-Motor Industry’s urgent call to reinstate “Click & Collect” from April 5th
In a recent national survey conducted by Behaviour & Attitudes 75% of the people surveyed said they would be comfortable visiting car dealerships/garages when travel restrictions allowed. Car dealerships/garages were ranked first out of eight non-essential Retailer categories as the most comfortable to visit. The Society of the Irish Motor Industry (SIMI), along with Industry leaders, from Retail, Wholesale, and Vehicle Distribution have re-emphasized that motor retail is ready to open, when restrictions allow. Retail in the Motor Industry is different from other non-essential retail. The large size of dealerships, the low average footfall, the ability to do business on a strict appointment-only basis, and the option of displaying cars outside lends itself to social distancing and safe retailing making car sales very low risk. From a health and safety perspective, the Industry has proven during the duration of the pandemic that showrooms can operate in a low-risk environment for their employees and customers. Car sales have been particularly challenging for the Industry, over the past number of years with a declining market since 2016. The first quarter of the year creates 60% of the sales for the year. Without this period, the Industry and the State will lose significant revenues. Gillian Fanning, President of SIMI and Director, Serfac Ltd “Our industry, as essential retailers, has been open for servicing throughout most of the lockdown. We have shown we can operate very safely for service and repair, ensuring the continuation of our supply chain and our vehicles are safe. The fact that people are now more reliant on private cars from a personal safety perspective, we request from the government that we can open our sales operations from the 5th of April, even if this is on a click and collect basis. The reopening of our sales operations is of critical importance to our industry and its related sectors. We believe that we can make a positive impact on the economy for the rest of 2021.” Brian Cooke, SIMI Director General: “Like the Government, the health and safety of the Motor Industry’s customers and employees continues to remain our top priority. We have provided essential services since the start of the pandemic and will continue to do so. Car Retailers have invested heavily to minimise the risk of COVID spreading, and the large showrooms and low transaction levels allow for social distancing well beyond the two-metre recommendation. With the improving weather and longer days, car sales can be transacted entirely in an outdoor setting, further reducing the already low risk environment. Balanced action by Cabinet is required to protect the future of our Industry, prevent further job losses and diminishing exchequer contributions. With over 40,000 people employed in the sector, it is crucial to the economy as our Industry has already been heavily impacted by the pandemic, with the impact on new car sales last year added to the 2021 shortfall coming in at over €1bn, of which €400 million is lost in exchequer funding. Our members are ready to re-open their showrooms once conditions allow, but an interim move to a click and collect basis is of vital importance to local businesses and employment.” Gavin Hydes, CEO Joe Duffy Motor Group and Chairperson of SIMI Franchise Committee: “Car Retailers, as essential retail, have demonstrated their ability to manage the service and repair of customers vehicles safely. The additional sales customers visiting our dealerships under click and collect would only be a minimal 10% on existing showroom visits, representing on average of six customers per retailer over the course of a day. A significant number of our customers will not conclude the sale until they can view the car physically in person and take an unaccompanied test drive, given the product's large financial outlay. I urgently request that the government support our Industry by announcing modifications to the restrictions this week and reinstate Click & Collect and unaccompanied test drives. As the industry waits with bated breath for the Cabinet’s update this week, we believe that the government's failure to act on this will inevitably result in further job losses as motor retailers will be unable to retain all of their people”. Paddy Magee, Country Operations Director, Renault Group and Chairperson of SIMI Distributors Committee: “Retailers around the country have, from the start of the Pandemic, invested heavily in measures to prevent the spread of Covid-19 adhering to HSE and HSA Guidelines. Showrooms are a very low risk environment for our staff and customers due to the size of premises and the ability to work by appointment only. We really hope that restrictions will ease next month and that the motor business can return to more normal levels once the health situation allows so that we can protect long term employment and local businesses.” #Motor
- Volkswagen ID.4 Review
Written by Justin Delaney, an Independent Reviewer, Journalist, and Motor expert. We recently got to spend a little time with the delightful new Volkswagen ID.4 on Irish roads and you can view our YouTube video right here. Now that dealerships are taking delivery of stock it’s about time we looked a little more at this fully electric SUV, which will no doubt be much sought-after for 2021. The ID.4 First Editions, the ID.4 First and the ID.4 First Max are now being delivered to the lucky customers who pre-ordered the vehicle prior to its Irish arrival. Even if you were not fortunate enough to get your name down for one of these early ‘First’ cars the order books are now open for ID.4 regular series models with prices kicking off from €34,436. Features So what are the regular ID.4 models if you missed the allocation for the First Edition cars and what spec do you get? Well the range is comprehensive but the easiest way to break it down is by name and battery size. Buyers can choose between the ID.4 City, Style, Life, Business, Family, Tech and Max with the 52 kWh battery fitted to the City and Style and the 77kWh battery on all other models. Volkswagen are very keen to make sure they have an ID.4 to suit everyone’s requirements and budgets so the entry-level ID.4 City from €34,436 comes with 18-inch alloy wheels, Navigation, Wireless Charging and Art Velours Interior. Stepping up to the ID.4 Style from €38,548 you get Matrix LED headlights, 19-inch alloy wheels, tinted rear windows, a rearview camera, 3-Zone Climatronic and Keyless Advanced Access. The ID.4 Life comes in at €44,001 with the same spec as the City only you get 19-inch alloy wheels and the bigger 77 kWh battery. The ID.4 Business priced at €48,887 takes the ID.4 City, adds a 77 kWh battery and Matrix LED headlights, 19-inch alloy wheels, anti-theft alarm, tinted rear windows, 30 colour interior ambient lighting, rearview camera and keyless access advanced. If none of these models fit the bill you can consider moving up to ID.4 Family priced at €50,365, which adds from the Business a Panoramic Roof, thermal insulation and acoustic glass 3-Zone Climatronic and a Luggage Net. The ID.4 Tech includes Head-Up Display (HUD), 12-inch infotainment system, panoramic sunroof, power seats with massage, 3-Zone Climatronic, Travel & Side Assist and Area View and an Easy Open Tailgate priced at €53,995. Finally the king option is the ID.4 Max priced at €57,810 and this gives you the full suite of equipment, adding to the Tech model a Heat Pump, Top Sports Seats and Dynamic Chassis Control. There are a number of individual options such as paint colours or a fold out tow bar that you can spec separately. Power, charging & battery Like the ID.3, buyers of the ID.4 wont be left looking for power. The 52kWh battery can punch the ID.4 to 100km/h in just 10.9 seconds and on to a limited top speed of 160 km/h. Charging is via 7.2 kW AC or up to 100 kW DC charging. Like most AC charging from 0-100% taking it will take around 7 hours 30 minutes but with DC charging you can get the battery to 80% in just 38 minutes. The big 77 kWh battery naturally packs more punch and can accelerate the ID.4 to 100km/h in 8.5 seconds and on to again, a limited 160 km/h top speed. Charging is via 11 kW AC or up to 125 kW DC, with charging times pretty similar to that of the 52 kWh battery. Safety As standard, it has an automatic emergency braking (AEB) system that is capable of averting collisions in a range of situations, including when the ID.4 is approaching other cars or turning across the path of an oncoming vehicle. It also helps drivers to avoid pedestrians and cyclists, both to the front and side of the vehicle. It has yet to be tested by NCAP but with a plethora of safety systems it will be no surprise to see it claim five stars just like the ID.3. Volkswagen ID.4 Prices We have detailed the pricing above in our model lineup but PCP Finance rates from as low as 2.9% APR €349 per month will be available from Volkswagen Financial Services for the new ID.4. Like other vehicle distributors Volkswagen Retailers can offer remote consultation and ordering under the current government guidelines. Summary So if you haven’t had a chance to see our YouTube video lets try put it into perspective size wise because when you see one up close, its very impressive. At 4.58 metre-long the ID.4 sits on a shared platform with the ID.3, but offers much greater space. The interior leg and headroom is similar to Volkswagen’s Tiguan Allspace SUV, yet the overall dimensions are closer to that of the VW Tiguan. Luggage for that staycation is an impressive 543 to 1,575 litres, depending on the rear seat configuration. One of the questions we were asked after our YouTube video was, is this a true SUV? Well we didn’t get to try it off road yet but VW have an all wheel drive variant and carefully positioned the battery under the passenger compartment to not only ensure a low centre of gravity but also give 16cm of ground clearance. This is not crazy by any means but it will allow the ID.4 to cope with light off-road terrain. Overall we loved our first drive in the ID.4 because like the ID.3 it feels and handles like a well made, well thought out car. The smoothness of an electric vehicle now with decent range is hard to beat particularly if you commute in and out of the City. To really test the range we are looking forward to spending a full week with the vehicle, which should allow us to further evaluate VW’s latest electric offering! The ID.3 was quick to establish itself as Ireland’s best-selling electric vehicle so lets see what the ID.4 can do. - MG ZS EV - Electric SUV Review
Written by Justin Delaney, an Independent Reviewer, Journalist, and Motor expert. Well isn’t this a breath of fresh air! The MG brand is back with a very compelling offering and hopefully this time it’s here to stay. The MG brand truly has an amazing heritage and it was difficult to watch the marque not only disappear from Ireland but struggle in the UK as funds dried up and the cars could no longer move with the competition. Thankfully Chinese giants SAIC Motor came to the rescue and gave the company that much-needed boost in financials. Over the last eight years the company has slowly returned to form and now has some very desirable and affordable cars. The development and testing still takes place at the historic Longbridge plant in Birmingham but all cars are manufactured in China. One Irish company tracking the progress of MG was the Frank Keane Group and as MG moved more towards hybrid and electric power-trains they decided it was time to relaunch the brand in Ireland. As of now the MG ZS EV and the MG5 EV Sportwagon are available in Ireland and we recently had the chance to spend some time with the MG ZS EV compact SUV. Features Starting with the exterior, the MG ZS EV boasts a new front face, which becomes instantly recognisable thanks to the prominent MG badge. The full LED headlamps sweep back towards the wings and give the nose a purposeful stance that looks far from cheap. The lower aluminium-effect grille finishes off the front end nicely and your charging port is directly behind the badge. Moving around to the side the MG ZS EV has tasteful modern 17-inch alloy wheels that come in two styles depending on if it’s an Excite model or Exclusive which our test car was. The Exclusive’s Tomahawk wheels compliment the muscular side profile of the little SUV and towards the rear you get a fresh aluminium look trim and stylish taillights that make it very modern. As of now six vibrant exterior colours including a brand new metallic colour, Battersea Blue are available. Three other metallic paints include Black Pearl, Cosmic Silver and Spiced Orange. A classic Dynamic Red made with a tri-coat finish was developed especially for MG ZS and Arctic White is the clean and crisp solid colour option for those keeping it simple. When you open the driver’s door you are greeted by a stylish new dashboard design with more soft touch materials and a detail stitching that looks great. The driving position sitting on the electrically adjustable seat is good and the steering wheel is adjustable up and down. The central 10.1-inch floating colour touchscreen featuring DAB radio, Bluetooth telephone and music streaming, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay is easy to use and our Exclusive test car also had iGO satnav and a 360 degree reversing camera. Below the screen a selection of buttons are arranged to allow access to the air conditioning and other key controls. Again our Exclusive version test vehicle benefited from leather-style upholstery, which is cloth on the Excite model. Battery & Range The MG ZS EV is powered by a 44.5kWh water-cooled lithium-ion battery which is covered under the impressive 7 year warranty. It feels zippy to drive and with 140hp on tap, it can do the 0-100km/h dash in just 8.5 seconds. It feels torquey to drive also with 350Nm produced from 5000rpm. This means even with four adults on board, those inclines will seem inconsequential. Safety With a five-star Euro NCAP safety rating you are in good hands with the MG. The High-tech MG Pilot driver assistance suite comes as standard on both models and features Active Emergency Braking, Blind Spot Monitoring, Lane Keep Assist and Adaptive Cruise Control which are normally associated with cars at a more premium price point. MG ZS EV Prices Priced from just €28,995, MG ZS EV is a great new option for not just private purchasers but also fleet, and corporate customers across the country. There are slight differences in prices depending on colours but even our top of the range Exclusive test car came in at just €32,895. Prices include the SEAI grant of €5000 and PCP options are available from 2.9% APR with no deposit needed. Summary We are not sure if it's nostalgia or not but the MG brand is a welcome addition to Irish roads. This first offering in the form of the MG ZS EV is an excellent starting point and we look forward to testing the Hybrid Version and the MG5 EV in the not to distant future. Living with the full EV for a week was easy considering the country is still in lockdown so we never got a chance to really challenge the WLTP certified range of 263 kilometres but it seemed to manage its power pretty well and with just a single overnight charge on a regular 3 pin socket at home, we had ample power to see us through the week. Testament to MG’s confidence in the quality of its design, engineering and manufacturing operations the 150,000-kilometer warranty or 7 years offers real piece of mind, especially for those worried about battery life! Welcome back MG we believe you have hit the ground running with this offering. To see our YouTube video review, please click here. - Know your PCP from your HP: The confident guide to financing options for electric vehicles
March 2021 | Written by Karen Kennedy, Bank Of Ireland Finance Protecting our environment for generations to come remains a prevalent concern for all consumers nowadays and we all know that one of the key enablers is to reduce our CO2 emission globally. If there is one thing that this awful Covid-19 pandemic and the numerous lockdowns have shown is that with less traffic on our road, the environment responded with improvements in the quality of air, cleaner rivers, less noise pollution, undisturbed and calm wildlife – an experiment you could say like no other. We know that in a normal environment, passenger cars account for approximately 12% of total EU greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. As part of the European Green Deal, the EU will implement strict CO2 emission targets over the next ten years that will force car manufacturers to produce more carbon-neutral cars which will in essence accelerate the move to Electric Vehicles (EVs). Furthermore, in October 2020, the Irish government has committed to Ireland being net-zero carbon emissions by 2050. That’s all very well but what does that mean for me as a consumer looking to make a car purchase and protect the environment in 2021? The good news is that there is certainly more choice now with all manufacturers and distributors having an EV option for customers. The technology still remains expensive to produce and it is expected that the requirement for government subsidies (SEAI grants) will continue into the future. Financing the purchase of EVs is also an option worth considering with lots of brands offering low interest rates even as low as zero. So, once you have navigated the grant available and the electric car most suitable for your driving needs, what are the payment plans that are available to you and how do you go about figuring out what is the most suitable for you? The good news is that the same finance products* that would be available on a diesel, petrol, or hybrid car through your motor dealer are available with Bank of Ireland Finance. The two finance options below are the main products offered to customers by their motor dealer and both are available when purchasing an EV. Let’s look at them now in more detail to understand how they work. Standard hire purchase: A hire purchase agreement splits the cost of the car into a deposit usually 20% of the cost of the EV (taking the current SEAI grant into account) and a number of monthly repayments over a set number of years (2-5 years) to suit your budget, with interest added. After the final payment is made at the end of the agreement, the car belongs to you. The repayments are fixed for the duration of the agreement which makes budgeting and planning easier. Personal contract plan (PCP): A PCP is a specific type of hire purchase which is typically over a three-year term combining a low monthly repayment and flexible options at the of your agreement. After the initial deposit usually between 10% and 30% of the cost of the EV (taking the current SEAI grant into account), the monthly repayments on a PCP are usually relatively low, because a significant amount of the cost is held back until the end of the PCP period which is called the Guaranteed Minimum Future Value (GMFV). This GMFV means you don’t need to worry about the resale value of your EV at the end of the agreement or the depreciation associated with owning a car. This guarantee gives you good peace of mind on the valuation of your EV as we watch the technology continue to evolve over the coming years. At the end of your PCP, you can pay the GMFV to own the car outright, trade in the car at any dealership of your choice, and take out another PCP to fund a newer car or hand the car back to the dealer with nothing further to pay**. Deciding which finance option is best for you is really important and you should take the time to do your research in terms of the products that are available to you. Ask yourself, how important is it for you to own the car, or do you like to change your car every three years and avoid costs such as NCT, etc.? Look at the interest rate, the term of the agreement, the deposit required, and if in doubt contact your motor dealer to discuss your options. They will be happy to talk you through the terms and conditions and explain how the particular finance options you are looking at works. There are some great offers in the market at the moment across the EV product range and the electric car market looks set to continue to grow year on year. Hopefully, it means we well on our way to reduce the overall EU greenhouse emissions for generations to come. - Audi A6 Avant Review
Written by Justin Delaney, an Independent Reviewer, Journalist, and Motor expert. The age-old argument continues, why buy an SUV when you can have all the practicality you need in a traditional estate car. Are you really going to be off road every weekend to justify the need for all wheel drive and ground clearance? For many the answer is no and if truth be told, all the car you will ever need could be yours buy just choosing the estate option. Today we are looking at the Audi A6 Avant, which is arguably one of the best-known estate cars for sale on Irish roads. Audi are synonymous with producing good-looking and performance orientated estate cars and the new A6 is certainly a handsome machine. For this car Audi leaned heavily on the flagship A8 and incorporated some of the luxuries associated with that car in the build and development of the A6. From advanced mild hybrid drive-trains, more comfortable suspension options to its sublime cabin comfort and exceptional all-digital MMI touch response interface this car is certainly at the sharp end of the sector. Features Like the A8 and A7 Sportback models, the A6 was next inline to get the new Audi design language with sharp edges and striking lines making it look muscular on the road. The Avant always had presence thanks to the long bonnet, lengthy wheelbase and short overhangs. It just looks like a motorway mile muncher even when standing still. Modern LED flat headlights and contoured air intakes frame the now even wider, low-slung single frame grille. The rear can only be described as beefy with those stunning digital OLED lights that have that trademark turn signal sequence. Inside its business as usual and you would be perfectly happy to take on a trip to the south of France in the new A6. Legroom in the rear exceeds not only its predecessor but also the majority of its competitors, while headroom and shoulder room have also grown. From the drivers seat the centre console is directed towards you, as is the top MMI touch response display, which almost disappears into an aluminium clip when switched off. Like the recently tested e-tron you get the MMI touch response system, which is intuitive and easy on the eye. The driver controls the infotainment via the upper display, which measures 8.8-inches in standard form or 10.1 inches where the optional MMI navigation plus upgrade has been specified. The lower 8.6-inch display, located in the console in the centre tunnel, is mainly used for the climate control. Our test car also had the head-up display projecting important information onto the windscreen. Power As expected, the Audi A6 is available with both petrol and diesel power plants. All engines in the A6 feature new mild-hybrid technology. Here, a belt alternator starter works together with a lithium-ion battery to allow the A6 coast at speeds of between 54km/h and 159km/h in order to save fuel and to initiate its start-stop function earlier from speeds of 30km/h and below in traffic. The engine is restarted from standstill automatically as soon as the vehicle in front of the A6 starts moving. During deceleration, the BAS recovers up to 12 kW of energy. Audi claim in real world driving, the MHEV technology reduces fuel consumption by up to 0.7 litres per 100 kilometres. Our test car was the A6 35 TDI variant equipped with a 2.0-litre diesel drive train. This motor is tuned to deliver 187.7bhp power in combination with torque of 400Nm and is paired with a 7-speed S Tronic automatic transmission gearbox. To be honest, this is all the car you need! The 2.0 petrol TSI is good also and not half as thirsty as you might think but for us it’s the diesel lump that suits this car best and if you do have a little extra budget, opt for the 204hp 40 TDI with the all wheel drive Quattro system. Safety Like the A8 and A7, the A6 is bristling with advanced safety equipment, including eight standard airbags, traffic-sign recognition, driver monitoring and systems that help the chassis deal with corners and crosswinds. A Driving Assistance Package is now standard, with features including blind spot monitoring, lane change assist and evasive steering assist. It also has adaptive brake lights and attention assist to ensure the driver isn't tired or distracted. An emergency call system is there to alert the emergency services automatically if the car is involved in a serious collision. Audi A6 Avant Prices The Audi A6 is available starting from €51,650 on the road. There are two equipment lines to choose from, SE and S Line. Audi are proud to state that the A6 is now the best-equipped car in the segment. New standard equipment highlights include LED headlamps, mild hybrid engines, Lane Assist, Pre Sense front, Audi Connect, leather interior and smart phone interface. Our S-line car had the black pack, 21-inch wheels and was coming in at a shade over €60,000. Various finance and PCP options are available from your local Audi dealer. Summary To drive the Audi A6 is nothing short of sublime. Audi use something called progressive steering, which becomes even quicker and more direct as the steering angle increases and it’s really noticeable when you are navigating the twisty Dublin Mountains for photo shoot locations. On sharp bends the length of the A6 feels inconsequential as the all-wheel steering is engaged to further enhance its agility. At low speed, the wheels steer in the opposite direction to the front wheels, reducing the turning circle by up to 1.1 metres to 11.1 metres, while at higher speeds the wheels turn in the same direction to offer stability when traveling in a straight line or changing lanes. On the motorway where the Avant will no doubt spend a lot of its life its effortlessly quiet and refined as the miles tick by. How Audi have managed to make the A6 so compliant on 21-inch wheels we are not sure but it feels smooth and surefooted under hard acceleration and braking. Then there is the space! With 565 litres of space that can grow to 1650 litres with the seats folded you can fit so much in. It’s the first vehicle we have tested this year that you can put a mountain bike into the rear without taking off the front wheel. All in all this is an excellent offering from Audi and probably our pick of their entire range. Yes money no object it would be wearing the RS6 badge at the back but you won’t be sniffed at in a 35 TDI. To see our YouTube video review, please click here. - Mercedes-Benz S-Class 2021 Review
Written by Justin Delaney, an Independent Reviewer, Journalist, and Motor expert. Here it is, the car that so many look to as the benchmark for future technology. The latest generation S-Class has arrived in Ireland in both standard and long wheelbase trim. This is Mercedes-Benz flagship offering and a car that introduced ABS back in 1978, a drivers Airbag in 1981 and Electronic Stability Control circa 1995. These were massive milestones for the S-Class and this tech would not just filter through all other Mercedes-Benz vehicles but around the world with other manufacturers taking note. Designed with what Mercedes now calls ‘a high-status grille’ highlighting its 200 sq. cms larger nose, it has classically elegant appearance that will no doubt please existing S-Class owners and possibly tempt new buyers to the brand. It has always had presence on the road and this latest variant is further complimented by a stunning profile with door handles that retract flush with the body when not in use or traveling extend automatically when you approach. Add to this the striking and powerful rear end and you have one good-looking car! Features Every time Mercedes-Benz announce a new S-Class you know you can expect an even higher level of standard specification than its predecessor. Now standard items include AMG Design Line, rear Thermatronic Climate Control, Nappa leather upholstery, heated rear seats, metallic paint and OLED Touchscreen with Augmented Reality. Interior spaciousness and comfort was another priority for Mercedes-Benz and when you sit in it is noticeably bigger with driver and rear passenger elbowroom increased by 38mm and 23mm respectively. Headroom is also plentiful with 16mm more travel to the headliner and the boot can now swallow 550-litres which is 20-litres up on the outgoing model. When the driver’s door is closed the ambiance is altogether quieter and more comfortable. Its hard to hear the engine when started thanks to improved acoustics and when driving additional air and hydraulics adjust the suspension and dampen body movement to give you that magic carpet feel. The S-Class makes use of the second-generation Mercedes-Benz MBUX User Experience with 3D display and 50 percent better computing power. Some of the features include eye-tracking spatial perception using cameras and algorithms that anticipate occupant wishes and interpret body language along with head and hand movements to manage functions. Essentially the S-Class is reading your mind as you drive! The ‘Hey Mercedes’ function, available to every seat occupant and recognises voice commands in twenty-seven languages. You can even chit-chat and ask general knowledge questions whilst on the move! A multi-speaker 4D sound system with any amount of personalisation functions and a new ‘over-the-air’ system that automatically updates software is also present! Hell the S-Class can even protect itself against vandalism but we will let your dealer talk you through that. Power Back up to the business end now and Mercedes have went with two petrol and three diesels offerings for now. A plug-in hybrid is also set to follow but all have a smooth V8 or 6-cylinder in-line engines paired with a 9G-TRONIC automatic transmission. The petrol S450 and S500 are powered by the 2999cc engines, 4-MATIC all-wheel drive with a top speed of 250km/h. The 0-100km/h comes up in 5.1 secs and 4.9 secs and torque of 500 and 520Nm respectively. Diesel variants include the S350d, S350d 4MATIC and S400d 4MATIC with top speeds of 250km/h, 0-100km/h acceleration from 6.4 to 5.4 seconds and torque of 600, 600 and 700Nm respectively. Safety Improved driver assistance packages that include the regular blind-spot monitoring, lane change assist and evasive steering assist are all present but an active body control feature which raises the vehicle up to 8 centimetres when a side impact threatens is also now installed on the S-Class. Add to this new headlamp technology which projects warning symbols onto the road ahead, Adaptive brake lights and attention assist to ensure the driver remains focused are all-present. The emergency call system can alert the emergency services automatically if the car is involved in a serious collision. As always you are in safe hands with the S-Class. Mercedes-Benz S-Class 2021 Prices Prices vary depending on your engine choice and specification but demand is expected to focus on the standard wheelbase 350dwhich is kicking off at €121,865. Naturally there are various tailored finance packages available through your local dealer. Summary Our time with the S-Class was short lived with Cork based dealer MSL kind enough to loan us an S-Class to film with. As expected it was sublime to drive wafting through the countryside making light work of virtually any road surface. Our test car had the optional supplementary ambient lighting making it a really nice place to spend time. The Start/stop function works much better on the big S-Class without turbo lag thanks to a powerful electric booster and integrated starter generator. It might look like a big fuel guzzler on the road but in actually fact between 35 and 42mpg can be achieved with ease in the 350d. In fact Mercedes are more conscious of their footprint these days and claim recyclable materials have been used in 120 components with more than 98kg made from resource-conserving materials and a further 40 kg from renewable raw materials. It really aims to be the best luxury car it can be in every department and who are we to argue. If you are lucky enough to be searching for a car in this category, then be sure to take a test drive. - Audi e-tron GT Review
Written by Justin Delaney, an Independent Reviewer, Journalist, and Motor expert. At a recent Covid compliant Audi event, the brand unveiled a car we have been anticipating for some time. The all-new e-tron GT is now available in Irish showrooms and it has been designed to demonstrate Audi’s overall plans for shaping the companies future of mobility. So what do we get with the new four-door coupé with its fully electric powertrain and stylish looks? Well this is the start of a new era or what Audi calls the Gran Turismo of the future. These cars will be powerful, fast, and engaging to drive all whilst producing zero local emissions. As of now the e-tron GT Quattro is available but soon this will be joined by the even more powerful RS e-tron GT. After a brief introduction we received the keys and set about exploring the Dublin Mountains. Features First impressions are good; the exterior of the Audi e-tron GT is a work of art with a stunning line that guides your eye from the headlights along the side and down to the large diffuser at the rear. Naturally it has to be extremely aerodynamic, and the drag coefficient is just 0.24 making it slip through the air like a fighter jet. A pop of the key fob unlocks the doors to reveal what Audi call a classic Gran Turismo design. The driver and front passenger seats are in a low position and separated by a wide centre console with all the switchgear within easy reach. Although it looks and feels like leather, Audi have opted for a sustainable recycled artificial leather with Kaskade material and to be honest, the quality is second to none. It’s hard to believe polyester fibres that were made from old plastic bottles, textiles, or residual fibres from selvages now clad this luxury interior. Glancing over your shoulder the generous rear seats offer ample space for passengers with decent legroom. So what level of tech do you get with the e-tron GT? Well like all Audi models, the e-tron GT is fully connected with state of the art infotainment, online services and the assist systems found in any top of the range Audi. One cool thing to note is the e-tron GT includes a heat pump that heats the interior with the waste heat of the high-voltage components. This system can reduce the loss of range caused by climate control significantly, which is often the case in winter by replacing the thermoelectric heating element. Owners can manage pre-entry climate control of the interior and charging by using the myAudi app, which is super easy to use. Power Naturally this is the first thing you notice when you drive the e-tron GT. The surge of power is relentless thanks to the fully variable Quattro drive that ensures power is distributed intelligently to the individual wheels. In normal dry conditions it primarily sends power to the front axle. When needed the powerful electric motor send power to all wheels and with 470hp on tap, you certainly feel it. Blasting away from the lights will see the e-tron GT complete the 0 – 100 km/h sprint in just 4.1 seconds. The high-voltage battery with a capacity of 86 kWh enables a range of up to 479 kilometres (according to WLTP) but we will have to live with the car for a little longer to see how accurate this is. Our route took us out of Sandyford, into Carrickmines and up towards Johnny Foxes pub. The e-tron GT hides its mass well and punches out of every bend with that magic carpet feel. The ride is sublime even running on 19-inch wheels and it felt comfortable enough to take on any long distance drive. Speaking of long distance, the 800-volt technology enables fast DC charging with an output of up to 270 kW. This means in just five minutes you can acquire approximately 100 km and roughly 23 minutes will get your battery up to 80%. Hopefully range anxiety will soon be a thing of the past if we can just get our infrastructure that little bit better. So what if you don’t find the new e-tron GT Quattro fast enough? Well for the first time on a vehicle not powered by a combustion engine, the RS badge will sit on the range topping e-tron GT with a power output of 590hp and 830 Nm of torque. That’s enough to make the earth spin in the opposite direction! This flagship RS model accelerates from zero to 100 km/h in just 3.3 seconds, which will be just phenomenal. Safety The all-electric e-tron GT has myriad driver-assistance technology, including adaptive cruise control as well as remote self-parking assist, which allows the driver to park the car via a smartphone app. Key safety features include, standard forward-collision warning and automated emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert. Naturally lane-departure warning and lane-keeping assist are also included. At the time of writing, the good people in Euro NCAP hadn’t crash tested the e-tron GT yet but if its sister car in the form of the Porsche Taycan scored 5-stars, we anticipate the same for the Audi. Audi e-tron GT Prices On our e-tron GT 350kW test car specification highlights included 19-inch alloys, Quattro with e-torque vectoring, a panoramic glass sunroof and front & rear parking sensors all as standard. This model has arrived at Audi dealerships nationwide, with prices kicking off at €102,397. If the RS e-tron GT 440kW is more your thing then expect to pay €140,367 entry. Summary Naturally this is a pivotal moment in Audi’s history and a massive step in the future of electric car mobility. We expected it to be good, and it is. After spending a good bit of time with the Porsche Taycan there are certain areas one beats the other but both are equally impressive. One such feature we liked more on the e-tron GT was the noise! Audi has composed a unique sound for the e-tron GT and it sounds powerful like a real car should. We don’t care if it’s false because in an effort to make the driver feel engaged, it produces a deep tone that means business when you sink the go pedal! Our time was short lived on this initial test drive but we have been promised a week long test drive to get a proper feel for the car and indeed put the range to the test. As mentioned above the Audi e-tron GT is now in Audi authorised dealerships nationwide and you can start configuring your dream spec by visiting Audi.ie. - KIA Sorento PHEV Review
Written by Justin Delaney, an Independent Reviewer, Journalist, and Motor expert. Well I think its safe to say that Kia have upped their game in the style department! I mean just take a look at this new Sorento and tell me it doesn’t look good. Finally a vehicle with real road presence that looks purposeful and functional all at the same time. Given the size of the new Sorento you would be forgiven for thinking its powered by a massive petrol or diesel lump but believe it of not, this all new Plug-in Hybrid has a 1.6-litre petrol engine working in harmony with an electric motor! More on that later but essentially what we are looking at here, is one of very few seven-seat plug-in hybrid SUVs available on the market, and probably the most practical. With up to 57 kilometres range from a single charge of its 13.8 kWh battery drivers should be able to complete many journeys including their daily commute, on zero-emissions electric power alone. Our daily commute was a little more than that but it cruised at the motorway speed limit on electric power only bringing in the petrol engine for overtaking with ease. Features So lets see what Kia have done inside of the flagship Sorento because the brand are claiming this is their most high-tech car ever. By amalgamating progressive connectivity, driver assistance and infotainment technologies you get a user-friendly twin digital displays that deliver amazing graphics, new telematics features and full wireless smartphone Apple CarPlay or Android Auto. You can keep track of the powertrain’s status including the battery via a 12.3-inch fully digital instrument cluster. Charging points are easily located on the go using the 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system but by far the coolest thing is the blind-spot camera screens that pops onto the dash when you turn left or right. This little circular screen is incredible, not just when parking but also on the motorway when you go to overtake. It has to be seen or rather experienced for you to understand the benefits. Our test vehicle was in K4 trim, which is top of the range. The materials used throughout were second to none and with beautiful mood lighting it really is a nice place to be. Space is plentiful also meaning five people and a significant amount of luggage can travel with ease. The automatic tailgate lifts to reveal a boot large enough to take a buggy and a couple of suitcases. With all seven seats in use the 175-litre boot can still accommodate enough for a family day out or a couple of sports bags etc. Power So providing that get up and go is not a fire breathing monster as mentioned above but a powerful 1.6-litre T-GDi engine, producing up to 180PS and 265Nm torque. Add to this an electric motor producing 67kW with 304Nm torque and the combined powertrain offers up to 265PS and 350Nm of torque. This makes it the most powerful Sorento ever believe it or not! Kia cleverly mounted the electric motor between the engine and transmission. This layout allows the Sorento Plug-in Hybrid to operate in all-electric mode, or draw on a blend of electric and combustion engine power providing power to the front wheels or all four wheels. Now the big question is where did they locate the battery pack? A lot of these hybrids suffer from space intrusion as manufacturers struggle to best position the batteries. Well not in this case. Kia developed a saddle-shaped battery pack that lays over the top of the prop shaft beneath the driver and front passenger seats. This layout means the battery pack doesn’t intrude on space like it has done on so many others! The battery pack features an independent water-cooling system for optimal heat management and efficiency. Given the confined location this was a must to allow self-contained cooling system to regulate temperature effectively. All really clever stuff! Safety The new Kia Sorento looks sturdy and safe and it most certainly is. Having been awarded the highest-possible 5-star safety rating by Euro NCAP buyers will be delighted to see standard safety features include Bind Spot Detection, Front Collision Avoidance, Lane Keep Assist, Lane Follow Assist, Smart Cruise Control, Highway Drive Assist, Smart Cruise Control and Parking Sensors Front and Rear. The Sorento achieved 82% for adult occupant protection, 85% for child occupant protection, 63% for pedestrian protection, and 87% in the ‘Safety Assist’ category making it very impressive indeed. KIA Sorento PHEV Prices Available in two trim levels, the K3 1.6 T-GDi AWD is coming in at €50,000 with 19-inch Alloys, 10.25-inch Navigation Screen with Telematics, Rear View Camera, 12.3-inch TFT monitor, leather upholstery with heated front seats and charge ports on all three rows of seats all as standard. Our test model was the K4 model priced at €55,000. This adds more comfort and safety features including the panoramic sunroof, driver and passenger power seats, an incredible 12 speaker Bose sound system, rear heated seats, power opening /adjustable tailgate, Blind View Monitor, Around View Monitor and Parking Collision Avoidance. These prices include the SEAI grant contribution of €5000. Summary We really enjoyed our time with the new Sorento. We had one as a long-term test vehicle many years ago and it’s very impressive to see how far the brand has come. One thing that was a little weak on Sorentos of past was the off road capability. This new model offers enhanced all-terrain capability thanks to a new Terrain Mode. By using the mode dial you now have ‘Mud’, ‘Snow’ and ‘Sand’ modes to play with. We did do some light off roading to see how the drivetrain would adjust the engine torque output and drive distribution but conditions were dry and nothing challenged it. On the road it’s compliant and pleasant to live with turning in beautifully and braking with confidence. For us though, the biggest party piece has to be CO2 emissions output of just 38 g/km (WLTP, weighted combined). That makes it one of the most efficient vehicles in its class with annual road tax of just €140. If that’s not something to smile about then we are not sure what is! Add to this the 7-year warranty and you have true piece of mind in the new Sorento PHEV. KIA Sorento PHEV Pros Drive Technology Space KIA Sorento PHEV Cons Not a lot really. Just be sure to have a home charger. To watch our video review of the KIA Sorento PHEV please visit the DoneDeal YouTube channel. To check out KIA stock on DoneDeal, click here. - Alpine A110 Légende Review
Written by Justin Delaney, an Independent Reviewer, Journalist, and Motor expert. Its days like this we live for as motoring journalists. Getting to drive unique and individual machinery is what excites us and with Alpine now back producing cars for the road, the future of motoring could be a brighter place! Alpine as a company are French based at the Dieppe factory, which was built in 1969. The brand made some incredibly exciting Renault powered cars over the years but production halted in the 1990’s with Alpine due to increasing costs and less demand. The Renault Sport division took residency in the Dieppe factory afterwards and other unique cars like the Clio V6, the Espace and current R.S. models all came to fruition. In 2017 the Geneva Motorshow saw the Alpine brand revived in the familiar shape of the A110 with deliveries starting at the back end of the year. This was a super lightweight focused car and finally, it has made its way to Ireland. Renault Ireland are currently testing the market with this particular vehicle in an effort to not only gauge interest but also to create brand awareness now that the Alpine name is also back in Formula 1. That partnership between Alpine and Renault needed to reborn and with the exciting A110 they have certainly hit the ground running! Features Ok so what sort of package have we got? The Alpine A110 is ultra-light at only 1080kg kerb weight with an aluminium platform and body that’s bonded, riveted and welded to provide exceptional rigidity. Its compact size, incredible weight distribution and low centre of gravity are all key to making this the ultimate throw back to the original 60’s A110 Berlinette. In looking at the side profile you can see how the design is sleek and efficient with the bodywork wrapping around lightweight 18-inch wheels keeping the footprint to a minimal. Up front Alpine’s DNA is evident with four independent full LED daytime running lights and that familiar central spine on the bonnet. The supercool 'X' shaped LED taillights with dynamic turn indicators give the car a low and aggressive stance from behind. Inside the A110 is minimalist but by no means sparse. The driving position is incredibly comfortable with loads of head room and you can see top quality materials like the natural-grain leather work in harmony with the body coloured structural aluminium and stunning carbon fibre. Our test car was in Légende trim and it featured the premium Focal Audio sound system, Alpine mats and other creature comforts like parking sensors. Power The Alpine A110 is powered by the familiar 1.8-litre 4-cylinder turbocharged engine usually found in the Megane RS. It doesn’t necessarily feel the same though because Alpine's engineers worked closely with the team in Renault Sport to make a specific air intake, turbocharger, exhaust system and a different state of engine tune to result in 252hp and 320Nm of torque. Those figures and the fact that the A110 weighs as much as a packet of crisps results in a power-to-weight ratio of 233hp/tonne punching it from 0 to 100km/h in just 4.5 seconds. This is no doubt helped by a Getrag 7-speed wet-clutch DCT gearbox which you certainly couldn’t change a manual as fast. A single exit active sports exhaust system expels unwanted gasses and it doesn’t sound half bad under load either! Safety The A110 hasn't been and apparently is unlikely to be tested by Euro NCAP. There are the traditional safety systems, which you would expect including Autonomous Emergency Braking, Hill-start Assist and airbags in all the usual spots. Our Légende trim test car brings the added convenience of the parking aids as mentioned previously. Alpine A110 Légende Prices Pricing is vague at the minute because Renault are not 100% sure if it will hit the Irish market officially. We are guesstimating a touch north of €70,000 for this particular Légende model making it a competitor for the Porsche Cayman and Audi TTRS. Summary Ok now the fun bit, what was it like to drive and live with. Well the lightweight A110, combined with double wishbone suspension front and rear, provides excellent handling and performance while at the same time offering incredible ride comfort and real world usability. This is biggest compliment you can give a car of this weight. I can’t stress how compromised other cars are in this category. Yes they are fast, good looking but when you live and try daily drive sports cars in this weight division, they can reduce your lower spine to sawdust! The power is more than adequate and you have three driver modes (Normal, Sport, Track) in which the engine and gearbox settings, ESC, steering, exhaust note and driver display are adapted to suit the road ahead. I found Sport engaging whilst not to raucous even in everyday conditions but I relish the opportunity to push it a little more in Track mode on a circuit possibly someday. The other surprising thing is its actually economical thanks to its low weight and decent CO2 emissions. In old money the A110 can easily return 35mpg even with some spirited driving. Space isn’t a massive issue either with a small boot behind the engine and frunk under the bonnet. A case and a couple of soft bags will easily make that road trip possible. So what’s next for Alpine and the future of the exciting brand. Well since this A110 hit the road the company have teased us with the A110 SportsX concept, which features a widened track and styling that pays homage to the original A110 racecar but if truth be told, it might never become a reality. Alpine have been asked to concentrate on electric powered cars going forward. The task of bringing engaging electric sportscars to the roads is underway and we have been told to watch this space. All we know is that if the A110 is the combustion engine swan song, then what a way to go out! Alpine A110 Légende Pros Handling Drive Styling Alpine A110 Légende Cons Nothing other than the headunit. DoneDeal hosts the widest selection of cars for sale in Ireland, with 78,000 on sale today.
