- The DoneDeal.ie Motor Industry Review: H1 2018
The number of used cars being sold in the country is down 5% year-on-year, according to the new DoneDeal.ie Motor Industry review for the first half of 2018, sponsored by Bluestone Motor Finance. View the full report here. A total of 483,152 used cars have traded hands in the year to June, compared to 507,300 for the same time period in 2017, however, the rate of the decline slowed considerably in the second quarter with a difference of only 305 car sales (217,334 in Q2 2017 vs. 217,029 in Q2 2018). As part of the report, DoneDeal.ie carried out depreciation analysis on used cars to identify the top five makes and models that have retained their value the most from when they were new in 2014/15. The car that retained its value the most was the Skoda Octavia with an average depreciation of 31% since 2014/2015. Next best was the Volkswagen Golf (32%), followed by the Nissan Qashqai (40%), Volkswagen Passat (46%) and the Ford Focus (49%). Meanwhile, Electric car ads on DoneDeal have surged in recent months, with a 58% increase compared to the first six months of 2017, Hybrid listings have risen by 65% in the same time period while Petrol listings are down 17% with Diesel ads up 11% to 215,937 units. Electric car searches have also sky-rocketed with over 1 million searches taking place for Electric cars in the first six months of 2018, compared to 350,000 for the same time period last year – a rise of 223%. Volkswagen is the most popular used car make of 2018, with a total of 48,166 Volkswagen’s changing hands in the used car market (Jan-Jun 2018). Toyota (41,412) and Ford (40,018) were next best with Nissan (23,954) and then Audi (20,173) rounding out the top five. During May and June DoneDeal.ie surveyed over 1,000 people looking to purchase a car and found that 57% of respondents were interested in purchasing a vehicle that was four years or older, with just 13% in the market for a brand new motor. Among those surveyed, Diesel’s were the strong preference when it came to engine type (63%) with 24% opting for a Petrol engine, while the remainder were split between Hybrid and Electric transmissions. Adam Ferguson from DoneDeal.ie said: “In the last six months alone we’ve witnessed over 31 million car searches taking place on site. One of the most interesting stories from the data in this report is the clear trend that is emerging in the Electric car market, both from the number of users who are searching for Electric cars but also from the sharp increase in the volume of Electric car ads being placed. For instance, at the top end of the used Electric car market, 13 second hand Tesla’s were sold on DoneDeal in the year to the end of June.”
- Searches rocket 32% for Convertible Cars during sunny weather
Searches for convertibles rocketed by 32% year-on-year during the warm weather according to new data released by Ireland’s largest motor website – DoneDeal.ie. The sharp increase in interest is notable, as an extra 45,000 searches for convertible cars took place during June and July this year, compared with the same time period in 2017. During June and July, DoneDeal.ie surveyed over 1,000 people who were looking to purchase a car and found that 64% of respondents were interested in buying a Diesel motor, with 22% in the market for a petrol engine with Hybrid (11%) and Electric (3%) making up the rest of the survey responses. 55% of those who responded indicated they would sell their old vehicle privately, compared with 45% who would opt to trade it in. Adam Ferguson from DoneDeal.ie said: “This large increase in the number of searches for convertibles reflects the spirit and optimism that the good weather brought and this was reflected in the way users were using and searching the site.” For this research, DoneDeal.ie analysed over 330,000 searches for convertibles which took place on the site between June and July 2017 and June and July 2018.

- Digital Marketing Insights – Display Advertising During 192
Now on the cusp of the 192 sales period, Manufacturers and Franchise Dealerships alike, are carefully planning and finalising their marketing strategies with everyone having one clear goal – maximise sales results. Delivering a strategic digital marketing campaign will be vital for securing sales enquires. How can display advertising deliver real results? In terms of building a digital strategy for Franchise Dealers, it is now essential to focus on both audience and contextual brand targeting. This will allow you to reach the ‘early researchers’ and “I’m still undecided” through to the “I’m ready to buy now” type of customers. In the new era of multiple financing offers, educating consumers to the affordability of new car purchases will be the deciding factor in reaching sales quotas for 192 registrations. Translating this message into a digital marketing strategy is not difficult. This can be achieved by using smart banner designs which are complemented by an engaging ‘call to action’. The campaign execution and performance relies heavily on reaching the correct audience and contextual targeting. DoneDeal Motors is the busiest and most used Irish online Motoring channel. With 49% of all dealer enquires now on 1-4 year stock profile, there is an opportunity for your dealership to promote new car offers to the largest market intenders, in your own local County. With audience and contextual brand targeting, dealerships will secure over 50% higher engagement rates in the form of visitor traffic to their website. By targeting consumers while they are actively searching for your brand or product on DoneDeal, allows you to engage with the consumer while they are in a ‘transactional’ state of mind. Digital Walk In’s Would you allow a customer to wander around your showroom without providing them with the relevant information to make a decision? ‘Digital Walk Inns’ to your website are equally as important. Having a campaign landing page that provides details of the offer and options to request a callback are vital to the success of your website. Banner Blindness Beware of publisher websites that deliver web pages, overcrowded with multiple banner formats and positions. This can cause “Banner Blindness” and have a significant effect on campaign engagement as it will dilute the overall performance of the campaign. Engaging Online Experience DoneDeal is mindful of both the user experience and advertiser requirements. By developing a display strategy that offers users value-added products and offerings matching their search criteria, both the user and advertiser benefit from an enjoyable and engaging online experience. This approach to digital marketing is a real driver in campaign results. Please get in touch if you are interested in learning about developing a display advertising strategy for your dealership. From campaign creation, through to bespoke audience and contextual targeting, with 100% real trackable results, the DoneDeal Motor Team can deliver real results from your marketing investment during the 192 sales period. - Skoda Octavia RS Car Review
Škoda Octavia is a brilliant and well-established car. It has grown its market share since it first entered the scene in 1996 due to a combination of practicality, efficiency and, of course, affordability. Value for money has been one of its best-selling points for years. If this isn’t enough for you, then the fact that it holds its value better than any other car on the Irish market (according to our Motor Industry Review 2018 H2) makes it an irresistible option to consider when you’re on the hunt for your next car. In recent years it has most commonly been powered by a 1.6 turbo charged diesel engine. Although this engine has been a popular one for families and taxi drivers alike, it’s not exactly very exciting to drive and therefore Škoda introduced the ‘RS’ model. View Skoda Octavia’s on DoneDeal now. To the naked eye, the RS model looks just like a higher spec Octavia. It’s got some sportier features like bigger alloys, RS badges and some extremely appealing bucket seats. Other than that, it’s quite subtle and understated, and this is one of my favourite things about this model. Inside the car, those bucket seats are extremely comfortable, pote ntially some of the most comfortable on the market. The balance of comfort and support makes the driver’s seat a lovely place to be. As far as technology goes, the Octavia doesn’t hold back. The RS model comes with just about every extra under the sun, from heated front and rear seats, to an easy to use Bluetooth phone connection system. The chances are, if you’re interested in an Octavia RS, then you’re probably more intrigued to know how it performs when driving. Both around town and at motorway speeds it continues to deliver in the same manner that a normal Octavia would. It does have stiffened suspension but, despite this, it’s actually reasonably smooth day to day. You will, however, be let down by the fuel consumption, and that’s because it’s got the same 2.0 litre engine as the Golf GTI. On the flip side, this makes it much more entertaining to drive than your standard Škoda. I wouldn’t quite call it a ‘fast car’, but with 230bhp it is without a doubt a very ‘quick car’. It will do 0-100kmph in 6.5 seconds which is a respectable time for any 5-door hatchback. You also hear a lovely noise whilst in the driver’s seat, but I must warn you that half of that noise is ‘fake’, as it’s being played through the speakers. Controversial I know, but in recent years this is becoming more and more of a common trend across the industry. From the outside it does have a ‘real’ exhaust note which will no doubt put a smile on any motor enthusiast’s face. In fact, if you use your right foot on the accelerator in a certain way, you can actually get a little pop and bang at high revs, which is always a pleasure to hear. So, it all looks good for the Octavia RS, it’s practical, comfortable, reasonably fast and even sounds nice. However, there is one massive drawback… it’s front wheel drive! Unless the roads are bone dry, the car won’t be able to deliver the power, no matter what tyres you have, but what’s worse is that the traction control intervenes and creates a terrible shudder that scares the living daylights out of you. This has, and probably always will be, a drawback to any high-powered front wheel drive car so I think it’s worth mentioning. However, the RS has a very intelligent differential that helps fight for the front wheel drive cause. Without going into too much detail, it effectively brakes the wheel on the inside of the bend to help hug the corner – and this really does work well. All in all, I think the Octavia RS is a great car that will hold its value well, fit your whole family and even bring a big grin to your face when you’re driving on some country roads.
