- November Fuel Survey Shows Price Increase
After three consecutive months of fuel price decreases, the latest AA Ireland Fuel Survey reveals a slight increase in petrol and diesel prices for November. According to the survey, petrol prices have risen by 2 cents to an average of €1.73 per litre, while diesel prices have increased by 1 cent to €1.67 per litre. Despite these increases, crude oil prices reduced slightly, averaging around $72 per barrel. Electric vehicle owners can expect to pay an average of €808.64 per year to cover an average of 17,000 km per year. Jennifer Kilduff, Head of Marketing & PR for the AA (Ireland), said, "Great news for EV drivers as reductions from Electric Ireland kicked in from November 1st. Shopping around for the best energy provider rates, making use of home charging if you can and using night rates will further decrease running costs. For petrol and diesel drivers, the price at the pump is marginally higher this month, mainly down to varying prices at different retailers around the country.” Keeping your vehicle properly maintained and reducing driving speed this Winter can improve vehicle fuel efficiency and performance. - Perfect Storm sees Japanese Second-Hand Car Imports Surge
Ireland’s leading importer of quality Japanese second-hand cars, the Automatic Motor Car Centre ( AMCC.ie ) based in Lusk, Co. Dublin, says that a ‘perfect storm’ of Brexit, ever increasing new car prices across Europe and Irish consumers’ more stringent demands for value for money are all contributing to the phenomenal growth in sales of second-hand cars imported here from Japan. Since 2018, when 2,621 vehicles were imported from Japan, that figure has grown to 22,482 vehicles year to date for 2024, meaning we are on course to finish the year with well in excess of 10 times the 2018 total. Japan is now the number one source for second-hand imports in Ireland, displacing the UK which in the last 20 years saw huge increases in imported vehicles here. However, that all changed in 2019 when the number of UK imports peaked and then witnessed a sustained decline ever since, in large part, due to Brexit rules kicking in. According to Cóilín Garvey, Sales Manager of AMCC.ie : “Brexit, with the mounds of extra bureaucracy and time involved in bringing in cars from the UK, is the number one reason which helped to boost the number of cars imported from Japan. Perhaps, in those early years, customers here may have been a bit wary of purchasing such second-hand Japanese cars as they were an unknown quantity, but very quickly motorists here cottoned on to the fact that Japanese imports are very well specced cars, much better than the average equivalent here in Ireland. “Over time, the Japanese imports have proved to be super reliable and that is down to the fact that, in general, Japanese motorists look after their cars better than Irish drivers do and what’s more, Japan has one of the most advanced road infrastructures in the world, that all helps to improve the longevity of these cars. Another factor in the attractiveness of Japanese imports is that the models we bring in are generally packed with the latest technologies and that helps to make the cars top performers in terms of safety and fuel efficiency”. Garvey added: “Approximately 25 percent of the cars we sell go to retail customers and the majority find a home at second-hand car dealers across the island of Ireland. For our trade customers, we are thrilled to announce our exclusive partnership with NextGear Capital, the largest provider of stock funding facilities for used vehicle dealers”. Ireland Manager of NextGear Capital, Peter Molloy said: “We are delighted to be partnering with Cóilín and the team at AMCC.ie to bring our expertise and tried and tested stock funding models for the benefit of AMCC’s car dealer customers. Our exclusive deal with AMCC.ie marks a significant milestone for the Irish market, as we are the first vehicle stock funder in Ireland to allow both registered and non-registered Japanese imports to be added to dealers’ stocking plans. We provide a cost effective, flexible and simple way for our car dealer customers to buy and manage their stock with 100 percent of the purchase price or market value funded”. “Ultimately with a NextGear Capital Stocking Plan, our car dealer customers can increase, upgrade or diversify their stock, helping them to grow their business in a profitable and sustainable way”. For more information on AMCC and to see their array of quality second-hand models, please visit amcc.ie and to find out more about how NextGear Capital’s stock funding plans can help bring car dealer business to the next level, please visitnextgearcapital.ie .
- Citroën Brings Serious Value With New C3
Citroën has today opened orders for its new B-segment hatchback, starting from €23,400 for both entry petrol and electric models. Pre-orders are now open for 251 registration at dealerships nationwide. With each new generation of the C3, Citroën has shaken up the market by offering an innovative concept while retaining its qualities, unique and strong design, distinctive onboard comfort, useful equipment for everyday life, and an attractive price positioning. The new C3 is no exception to this rule and brings a true difference to the market of petrol and electric B segment hatchbacks. Innovative, modern and clever, new C3 is an improvement on the previous generation in every respect. Popular above all, it appeals to a wide audience by being affordable and offering different powertrain solutions adapted to customer's needs. Externally, the new design signature and identity of the French marque proudly contrasts vertical and horizontal elements in a brave, technical fashion. At the front, the taller, more vertical face incorporates a large new oval ‘chevron’ logo proudly sitting centrally and reinforced on each side by gloss black horizontal grilles featuring an eye-catching and technical interpretation of the chevrons inspired by architectural parametric designs. A major element is the distinctive new design of front and rear lights which was first seen on the Citroën Oli concept vehicle, and which features a unique three-level lighting signature with one vertical and two horizontal lenses that resemble blades. New signature taillight clusters push into the vehicle corners and comprise two horizontal and one vertical lens echoing the front clusters. Still agile and maneuverable at 4.01m in length, the new C3 remains compact for greater agility and has a reduced footprint on the ground for stress-free maneuvering and parking. With a height of 1.57m, the new C3 is almost 100mm higher compared to the previous generation and up to 137mm higher than competitor models in its segment. The ground clearance increases from 135mm on the previous C3 to 197mm for the new C3. This raised position, in addition to giving a slight SUV-like appearance, facilitates getting in and out of the vehicle, and provides a more assured drive over speed bumps and potholes often encountered in urban and suburban driving. Inside, a more spacious interior with more legroom, headroom, and elbow room for added comfort. Seating is raised by 76mm compared to the current version. This allows occupants to have a higher and more commanding driving position, with an increased sense of control and safety. Additionally, having more height provides more headroom, an additional 31mm vs market average, and allows for adjustments in seating position to free up more legroom for passengers. Efforts have also been made to achieve increased elbow room for rear passengers by 19mm and for front passengers by 21mm compared to the market average. The larger interior features useful and clever storage spaces on the door panels, center console, and under the central armrest, while boot space is generous and increases by 10 liters to reach 310 litres. Its capacity can be increased thanks to the modularity of the 60-40 rear seat. Comfort is paramount for Citroën and the all-new C3 does not compromise, for the first time, the new C3 adopts progressive hydraulic cushion suspension. Exclusive to Citroën, the suspension will arrive as standard on all C3 versions and provide occupants with a unique sensation of comfort onboard. As the perfect complement to the comfort-oriented suspension, the Citroën Advanced Comfort® seats of the new C3 also provide gains in terms of ergonomics and postural comfort. Their design has been upgraded for the new C3 to be even more enveloping and provide better lateral support. They use an additional 10mm of foam to offer a feeling of softness and comfort from the first contact, ensuring good support regardless of the distance traveled. The front of the cabin has been designed to be simple, warm, and ergonomic to reduce mental load and provide a feeling of serenity. This is achieved first through a very minimalist horizontal dashboard to enhance the impression of width. Light and airy, it frees up space for the driver and passenger. The absence of a traditional instrument cluster is a real novelty for the upper level of the dashboard. The new C3 uses, for the first time, a new Citroën Head-Up Display, reflecting vehicle information on a glossy black surface located between the top of the dashboard and the bottom of the windshield. This clever solution ensures no duplication of information, as traditionally seen between a head-up display and an instrument cluster, allowing the driver to easily access all key information needed without taking their eyes off the road. The new C3 and all-new ë-C3 will be available for in Ireland with a streamlined line-up of just two well-equipped versions – ‘Plus’ and ‘Max’. The entry ‘Plus’ series comes with a high level of standard equipment, including front LED headlamps, Citroën Advanced Comfort® Suspension, Citroën Advanced Comfort® Seats, 17-inch diamond-cut alloy wheels, new Citroën Head Up display system, 10.25-inch touchscreen with Apple Carplay and Android Auto, decorative roof rails, front and rear skidplates, automatic wipers, power folding and heated door mirrors, leather-effect steering wheel, 60/40 folding second row seat and driver seat adjustment, electric door mirrors, automatic lights, rear parking sensors, rear spoiler, cruise control, manual air conditioning and 6 airbags. Meanwhile the top-of-the-range ‘Max’ series adds rear privacy glass, grey fabric/leather effect combination upholstery, automatic air conditioning, 3D navigation, wireless smartphone charging, reversing camera, electrochrome rear-view mirror, heated driver and passenger seats and heated steering wheel. The all–new ë-C3 will be offered in a choice of 6 distinctive and high-quality colours – Polar White, Monte Carlo Blue, Elixir Red, Bright Blue, Mercury Grey and Perla Nera Black. Citroën’s signature two-tone contrasting roof will be available to customers as standard equipment in black or white on entry ‘Plus’ version depending on body colour chosen. Customers can also choose to have a body-coloured roof as a no cost option. New C3’s versatility stands out with its multiple powertrains of electric, petrol and hybrid. The cost-efficient, BEV-native platform, starting from €23,400, uses a 44kWh battery pack to deliver up to 320km WLTP driving range. New C3 also offers a 1.2-litre turbo petrol engine with a power of 100hp from €23,400*, paired with a 6-speed manual gearbox which has been completely redesigned for performance and reliability. The new C3 also makes electrification more accessible by offering Hybrid 48V technology. Compact, lightweight and affordable, this solution is particularly appropriate for this versatile urban car , enabling up to 50% of city journeys to be made in electric mode starting from €26,800*. Speaking on the announcement, Citroën Ireland Managing Director, Colin Sheridan, commented: “We are thrilled to announce pricing for the all-new Citroën C3 and ë-C3 starting from just €23,400. This model disrupts the segment by introducing an affordable, highly equipped offering with a choice of petrol and electric at the same price point. The pricing and specification cements Citroën’s commitment to making electric mobility accessible to all, we look forward to seeing all-new C3 on Irish roads for the 251-registration period.”
- 50 Years of the Volkswagen Golf
The Volkswagen Golf celebrates its 50th anniversary this year, marking half a century of evolution and influence in the automotive industry. Launched in 1974 as a successor to the iconic Volkswagen Beetle, the Golf quickly established itself as a game-changer in the compact car market, offering a blend of practicality, reliability, and driving pleasure that made it one of the world’s most beloved hatchbacks. Over the decades, the Golf has seen eight generations, each bringing innovations that have redefined what a compact car could be. The first-generation Volkswagen Golf, also known as the Mk1, debuted in 1974. Designed by the Italian designer Giorgetto Giugiaro, it was a departure from the rear-engined, air-cooled Beetle that preceded it. Instead, it featured a front-engine, front-wheel-drive layout and a water-cooled engine, which was revolutionary for Volkswagen at the time. The Mk1’s boxy shape and compact size made it agile and practical, appealing to a wide audience and setting the foundation for what would become the "hot hatch" segment. The Golf GTI, released in 1976, took this concept to a new level, adding performance and sportiness that appealed to driving enthusiasts and solidified the Golf’s reputation as more than just a practical family car. The second generation, or Mk2, launched in 1983, built on the success of the Mk1 by refining its design and improving the interior space. It introduced groundbreaking features such as anti-lock brakes (ABS) and all-wheel drive in some versions, showing Volkswagen's commitment to safety and innovation. The Golf’s success continued with the Mk3, which arrived in 1991 and won European Car of the Year in 1992. This generation saw the introduction of standard safety features like dual front airbags and side-impact protection, as well as the first-ever Golf TDI, which highlighted Volkswagen’s advances in diesel technology. The Mk4, launched in 1997, brought a more refined and upscale feel to the Golf lineup, with improved build quality and a more sophisticated design although some stated the additional weight made it less fun to drive. This generation also saw the debut of the legendary R32, a high-performance model that featured a 3.2-liter V6 engine and all-wheel drive. The R32’s popularity paved the way for the eventual Golf R models, which have since become some of the most sought-after performance-oriented Golfs. The fifth generation, or Mk5, introduced in 2003, marked a leap forward in terms of technology and performance. The Mk5 GTI was praised for its turbocharged engine, offering a perfect blend of everyday usability and sporty performance. With the Mk6, Volkswagen focused on refining the Golf’s design and improving fuel efficiency, which became increasingly important as environmental concerns grew. The seventh-generation Golf, or Mk7, introduced in 2012, represented a significant step forward with Volkswagen’s new MQB platform. This modular design allowed for more efficient production and weight reduction, improving both fuel economy and handling. The Mk7 also saw the debut of the Golf GTE, a plug-in hybrid model that emphasised Volkswagen’s commitment to electrification. The latest generation, the Mk8, was introduced in 2019 and brings the Golf firmly into the digital age. Featuring a fully digital cockpit, advanced driver-assistance systems, and improved connectivity, the Mk8 is a reflection of how the Golf has evolved to meet modern demands. The Golf Mk8 lineup includes traditional gasoline and diesel engines, mild hybrids, and a plug-in hybrid, offering a range of options for different drivers. Notably, the Golf’s journey toward electrification continued with the release of the all-electric ID.3, which has been touted as a spiritual successor to the Golf, signalling Volkswagen’s broader shift toward an electric future. Beyond its engineering and design achievements, the Golf has had a significant cultural impact. It has become a status symbol, representing reliability, quality, and understated style. Enthusiast communities have formed around the Golf GTI, Golf R, and classic models, celebrating the car’s heritage and versatility. Its adaptability has allowed it to appeal to a wide demographic, from first-time car buyers to performance enthusiasts and families. It has been celebrated for its commitment to quality, innovation, and adaptability. Across its eight generations, it has introduced groundbreaking technologies that have set industry standards, such as turbocharging, direct fuel injection, and advanced driver-assistance systems. The Golf’s mix of practicality, performance, and reliability has allowed it to remain competitive even as the automotive landscape has evolved. As the Volkswagen Golf reaches its 50th anniversary, it faces a rapidly changing automotive industry focused on sustainability and electrification. While the Golf’s future as a combustion-engine model may be uncertain, its legacy is likely to continue in Volkswagen’s electric ID lineup. As the world shifts towards zero-emissions vehicles, the Golf’s influence will hopefully remain strong. We just wish there was concrete plans to keep the name alive. Many of our writers here in DoneDeal are previous Golf owners and they firmly believe the 50-year journey of the Golf, has proved how a single model can evolve and adapt, consistently remaining relevant. Perhaps Renaults recent introduction of the electric Renault 5 will be food for thought.

- New Nissan Qashqai Arrives
Nissan is once again turning heads in the crossover segment after unveiling the new Qashqai with e-POWER and mild hybrid which takes to Irish roads with a refreshed and modern design that is certain to attract new car buyers. Almost 60,000 Irish drivers have bought a Nissan Qashqai since Nissan created the crossover segment with the original Qashqai in 2007 and the modern version of the car reaffirms it credentials as Ireland’s favourite crossover. The refreshed Qashqai includes bold exterior restyling, comprehensive updates to the infotainment and connected services on-board and a refined interior design, while keeping the essence of what customers love about the car. The new model is more muscular and sharper looking. The front grille has been completely modernised to create a more striking first impression. New headlights bring a sense of purpose and presence, and the rear bumper has also been reshaped to deliver an all-round sleeker and sportier look. The refreshed Qashqai has Google built-in as part of the Nissan Connect infotainment system. The updated car comes as standard with Google Maps, while Google Assistant allows drivers to use their voice for hands free help on the go and to access an ecosystem of apps that are available for download on Google Play. The Around View Monitor system, which is one of the most used features on the Qashqai, has been significantly upgraded. It now features a 3D function allowing the driver to see the car not only from above but also from eight different external camera view points to potentially identify any unseen exterior hazards. A feature known as ‘invisible hood view’ allows the driver to see the position of the front wheels as if looking at them from just behind, which enables them to precisely manoeuvre into tight locations, such as multi-story car parks. AVM tech can also be used to help drivers make a safe entry from a difficult exit onto a road where visibility is limited. The interior of the new Qashqai has been upgraded to offer a more premium feel. The upper grades feature a new application of AlcantaraÒ on the dashboard, door inserts, door armrests, centre storage lid and knee pads to elevate the onboard experience, along with updated seat trims. The new Qashqai is now available with e-POWER, Nissan’s unique and innovative electrified powertrain. The petrol engine charges a battery that powers an electric motor which makes it possible to drive the car in EV mode 100% of the time, unlike traditional hybrids. Drivers can enjoy an EV like experience without having to think about range or recharging. Customers seeking to take their first step towards electrified driving can also choose the new Qashqai mild hybrid which uses a petrol engine to power the wheels while a lithium battery provides support. The system stores energy to power the vehicle’s electrical equipment and to lower fuel consumption. Seamus Morgan, Managing Director at Nissan Ireland said: “The Nissan Qashqai has been one of Ireland’s favourite cars since Nissan pioneered the crossover segment in 2007. The new Qashqai has been completely modernised and its new design, upgraded tech and refined interior continues to set the standard for crossovers.” “The latest changes greatly enhance everything that our customers love about Qashqai, adding even more intuitive and convenient technology. Families all over Ireland have grown up with Qashqai and we are proud to unveil how Nissan has reimagined the car so that it can better meet the everyday needs of drivers, especially those with families big and small.” The Qashqai 1.3 Mild Hybrid is available from €39,900 for the SV grade, from €43,300 for the SV Premium Grade, and from €46,300 for the SV Tech grade. It is also available with CVT transmission from €43,400 for the SV grade, from €46,800 for the SV Premium grade, from €49,800 for the SV Tech grade, and from €52,700 for the SVE grade.
